I am a Savage Nation fan and I do like Mike's style; but I also feel that his weakness is a quick temper coupled with name calling; Charles Barkley could be a great help to the conservative cause if he is not abused , the shoe shine bit was way over the line.
To: The Ghost of Richard Nixon
The bottom line is that Barkley is trying to pin down Savage as a racist. I got a big kick out of hearing Michael Savage say he didn't know who Charles Barkley was. I had to think about it a moment, myself. Once you get away from the world of overpaid, underskilled, undeveloped, big-mouted, boring NBA basketball, Barkley IS nobody special...oh yeah, now I remember Barkley. He is the one who once said to sports reporters, "I hate white people."

I agree that the "shine my shoes" comment was too much. The thing was over when Barkley called him a dumb-ass, and he would have been wise to have throttled back at that point. As for some sort of blowback from this, Savage hasn't had his words successfully used against him so far, even though he's been arrogant and demeaning with plenty of callers, a few of whom have been black. Of course this time there's video with it, and it's Charles Barkley, and it's in the hands of CNN. I don't know how that might change the situation. It'll be interesting to see if anything comes of this.

Seriesly, who is Barkely. Savage seems to suggest he plays basketball ... I've never heard of the guy.Charles Barkley is a black ex-NBA superstar who thinks for himself. When Barkley first went to play for the Phoenix Suns, the state of Arizona would not recognize Martin Luther King's birthday as a holiday, so many black leaders critized Barkley for signing with Phoenix. Charles' reply was, "Hell, I'd play for the Ku Klux Klan if they paid me what I asked for."

Charles Barkley actually is a tough guy--and pretty bright, too. Barkley is not all that bright. He is a colorful personality who is not afraid to express his opinions, however, when challenged, he can rarely offer coherent reasons for his views.
One example was his ridiculous charge that Augusta National was lengthening the golf course in a racist attempt to prevent Tiger Woods from winning the Masters. In reality, lengthening the course inures to ther benefit of a long ball hitter like Tiger at this point in his career, and he won the tournament after the changes were made to the course. Barkley's ludicrous attempt to make the course changes about race (and to interject himself into Tiger's spotlight) showed him for the true buffoon that he is.

Do you think he was serious? Tiger Woods
is a long ball hitter, isn't he?
I'd like to hear the context of Barkley's statement. I will freely grant that he does make statements he can't back up. (That is his jock persona.) Still, Barkley is brighter than most FReepers realize, even if he is foolish.

In the first scenario Savage savages Barkley by talking too fast for the Round Mound to keep up. In the second, Barkley beats Savage into a bloody pulp. The real question is which event the public would like to see. :-) I think a growing number of people would prefer to watch the second one.
Narcissistic intellectuals are offensive to just about everyone. Most of us even grow tired of hearing parents brag on their own kids' grades in school.
(In an admittedly perverse way, I have actually learned to laugh at the bumper sticker which says "My kid can whip your honor student's a**.")

I remember Barkley endorseing Dole over Clinton, and praising Jack Kemp. Though, knowing Barkley, he probably flips on everything. He also gave his "endorsement" to the first George Bush over Clinton and has praised the elder Bush several times, but has been quiet on George W. Bush.

Savage is the Howard Stern of the Right.
I don't think he does anything but damage the conservative image in the eyes of the uninvolved, potential swing voter. He's a shock-jock and a comic book version of our principles is his schtick.

Yes. However, he is an @sshole.

Those wishing to listen to Mr. Barkley in a more rarified atmosphere may want to listen to
this RealAudio file of his appearance on NPR's Fresh Air last October.

First of all, let me say that I have some strong opinions about Michael Savage, and they are not entirely positive. (I notice he contradicts himself frequently, and that he is double-minded and egotistical. Also, he fails to show a grateful heart and fails to deflect praise to those responsible for particular successes.)
That said, this interview is HILARIOUS! I wish I'd seen it! Michael, if you're listening, it sounds like you might have lost your cool, but you sure did it with a style uniquely you. In this instance, I have to say, YOU ROCKED!
To: The Grim Freeper
does anyone have an audio file of the appearance?
To: modern_orthodox
UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I agree with Charles Barkley. About what? He didn't say anything up to this point.
But let me tell you who he is. He is Charles Barkley. How can you not know him?
If Rush didn't mention him way back when, I probably wouldn't know him either. I hate basketball.
Quite the intelligent audience at Talkback Live.

Charles Barkley actually is a tough guy--and pretty bright, too. Are you kidding? Then he must have been drugged for this show because I heard the show clip and read the transcript and he came across like a moron.
