He has become nothing but a media hack. Its amazing. This is what happens to a person who spends most of their life in front of a camera. Its called the Hollywood Sin Drone.

There's enough bombs and bombers (B-52 and B-2) in Deago garcia to turn North Korea into a great big pond. They don't want a fight with us. The first move they make at the DMZ and that's their a$$. It'll take about 20 minutes for the bombers to arrive from the Indian Ocean.
To: go star go
Yea, we got plenty of bombers, but one of their real bragging points is the virtual wall of steel that they can put above their cities. These guys have had 50 years to dig in and have not wasted it. The point that i was making earlier is that Hackworth is being consistent, he called for the pullout back in 94 as well, what is wrong with saving some $ for other defense needs?
To: Calvinist_Dark_Lord
There is no defense to American bombs. That should be readily apparent. You can bet North Korea knows this.
Now to your question, pulling out now would be a green light for the North to take the South. Where have we seen this before?
To: All
At a certain point we have to abandon the do-it-all-ourselves mentality. Japan, South Korea, China, and Russia should all have a greater responsibility than we to solve this problem. By babysitting and giving them an excuse to duck military realities entirely we invite this ridiculous situation.
It's time we had Japan and South Korea step up to the plate on defense matters, just like we have been telling the Europeans to do. The Euros don't take their own defense seriously, because they know if push comes to shove, the USA will save their sorry asses.
We can be a solid and loyal ally without assuming all the responsibilities for solving every military problem.

I never met a good combat soldier who was a loud mouth. That's why I distrust Hackworth. I do know his reporting on the Mogadishu fire fight was inaccurate.

Why is it moral and national cowardace to not want to defend people who hate our guts?
Why the heck are we in South Korean? They hate us. They say so repeatedly and often. They want to reunify with North Korea . So why do we have troops there? Pull them out, let North Korea invade or let them reunify. None of our business.
Unfortunatley, our soldiers in the first Korean war did die for nothing. Just like our soldiers in Viet Nam. We can't save places like this from themselves.
To: go star go
You mean like Kosovo (all of 14 Serbian tanks knocked out)? Moot point anyway, sea launched cruisies better, and more accurate. As per the other issue, you really think they wouldn't think twice about all of that air support you're bragging about, and what would happen to their armour formations?
To: Jeremy_Reaban
Why is it moral and national cowardace to not want to defend people who hate our guts? If N Korea was beign quiet and peaceful and not doing anything stupid then I would have no problem with pulling the troops out.
Retreating in the face of agression IS COWARDICE and will multiply our problems with other nations on an exponential scale.

I'm pretty sure NK intends to leave things just as they are with the exception that they intend to build nuclear bombs. There's no need to cut and run. They will not attack because it means certain death to NK. Without American troops there attacking no longer means certain death to NK.

Let's see what America's puplicity whore has to say.Now THAT is something with which we can agree....I met Hack one day when he came to WP to hawk his book...he's just as obnoxious in person as he is on TV.

If Hackworth is on point for US foreign policy the wise thing to do is to move as fast as you can in an equal and opposite direction.
He was wrong in 1991, he was wrong about Afghanistan, he's wrong about Iraq and he's wrong now.
We may not have cause to remain in the Korean peninsula now days but to shag now because the North Koreans have waved their nuclear capability, courtesy of the Clinton/Carter Morons for Appeasement, in our face is a decidedly bad idea.

How is pulling two combat brigades (about 10k troops), some USAF personell, and admin people running? The DPRK can make all of the propoganda statements they want, they do know that we can come back anytime we need to. Let's get a bit of perspective here, Military people are not stupid no matter what flag they fly. Politicians are another matter, as are political systems. Remember something else, we still have 3rd Marines in Okinawa, and 25th Light (Hackworth's Korean war unit), in Hawaii, and 7th Fleet is still the biggest, toughest kid on that block.

How is pulling two combat brigades (about 10k troops), some USAF personell, and admin people running? Let's see... NK starts being roudy and we haul our troops out and we're not running? I guess it's easy to rationalize that into something it's not for you but I can't rationalize it into anything other than what it is.
To: Bommer
Dearest Bommer, Thanks for that reminder!
I had just seriously begun to fret about all our Battle Groups being in, or about to be in, the NearEast!
I'm old enough to remember when our Navy would NOT send even one aircraft carrier into the Persian Gulf.

Don't want to defend Hackworth character, too many flaws. He was not wrong in 91 "it's a six minute war", Jury is still out on Afghanistan, and who cares what the marxist, cult-of-personality political whores in DPRK and/or elsewhere think? Planning people on all sides of that equation know better than to read something into that. Vietnam was a stated pullout with no intention of returning, there is no analogy here. This is a simple case of not letting world opinion prevent the US from doing what is best for the US
To: Always A Marine
You have a good deal of common sense.
To: go star go
37k US forces is a token drop-in-the-bucket compared to ROK army. It has been a token committment for years, and everyone knows it. The ROK does not need tokens, they KNOW that we can back them any time they need us (they problbly wouldn't). We spend more money on a token than the alleged deterrent value justifies.
To: Calvinist_Dark_Lord
I'm not debating any of that. I say let's shut down NK's nuclear program then pull out. You don't tuck and run as soon as the enemy starts sabre rattling. Defeat him then leave.
To: Calvinist_Dark_Lord
Col. Hackworth's predictions of casualties in the Gulf were off by several orders of magnitude.
