I can't say what I am thinking about the ACLU, I'd be banned. This compromise is a pretty good one, it is not satisfying everyone, but we can all live with it. And the community may just start getting over the bitterness. And then of course, the ACLU regretfully has to screw up the whole deal. They think people are soooo stupid. It is clear and obvious where the sidewalk ends and the Plaza begins. Arghhhhh!
There might be a bit of good news in this though. I think I remember reading in the original agreement that the LDS church is obligated to keep the Plaza open at all times, no obstructing of the view, etc. The ACLU probably has studied the original agreement and figured out that a fence should be put up. But where should the gates go? And when you walk through the gate, where does the sidewalk end and the Plaza begin??? I really hate the ACLU and their smug lawyers. They know very well this is going to cause problems.

However, such a lawsuit would put the ACLU a champion of public access and free speech
Now I have heard everything.
They are a conclave of leftist lawyers dedicated to being a pain in the ass.
It would be interesting to get a group of conservative lawyers to watch their every move and sue them 5 times a day till they went broke.

Great comments. This issue has been so divisive in SLC, and now the ACLU just wants it to continue. The Plaza was open for three years to the public without many problems. The ACLU is just intent on causing problems in communities, all in the name of freedom. They lie.

Yeah..
What's so sad about it is, I am sure they would lose half their cases but no one can afford to beat it all out through the court..
So, they just capitulate.
It's cheaper.

I'm not so sure the LDS church will capitulate in this instance. This Plaza has cost them a lot more than was originally estimated. And now they get to pay for the easement with money and land. I'm sure there will be some um negotiating going on. What can't they just paint a big yellow line on the sidewalk and say "You are now entering private property?" There will be discreet signs announcing the rules. May I just say again how much I hate some lawyers?

Hey, that's a great idea. You're on to something here..
Turn the thing into a political ad against the ACLU.
Demark it very clearly as PRIVATE PROPERTY!!
Then add a plaque explaining how the ACLU's anit Christian actions made this necessary.
Spell the whole thing out right there.. Make this display a witness forevermore, to whomever stops to read it.
That's a great idea.. You should email them and suggest it.

I actually think I am going to. My brother works for the corporation that handles the LDS church's properties, I am going to talk to him about it. Thanks for the encouragement!

ACLU lacks diversity. They are all anti-Americans, all anti-Christian bigots, all of them hate the Bible, and all of them are insane.

When are these damnable ACLU pests going help out on a case where someone's Second Amendment rights are being attacked? All the ACLU does these day is to promote secularism/atheism in the public square. I loathe them.

It would be great..
Give the ACLU a blackeye for all time and remind people of the length others will go to in their effort to rid the country of Christian symbols.
It will still be there witnessing to passers by long after the story has been forgotten.

No, you haven't heard everything. There's nothing whatsoever new in discovering that the ACLU has fascist leanings - they always did!

The description of the ACLU members as consisting of a gaggle of anti-Christian bigots is spot on. You may not have noticed that no one in this country is ever laughed at for criticizing the ACLU these days.

Oh I know.. I know all about it.
I just thought that a memorial of sorts would be there to tell the story long after most everyone else has forgotten it..
It will be there to witness to anyone who happens to walk past and glance at the plaque...

I notice you don't even TRY to dispute the accuracy of anything I said.
Have you ever even HEARD of the ACLU?

I notice you don't even TRY to dispute the accuracy of anything I said. I don't need to dispute your assertion that every member of the ACLU is anti-American, an anti-Christian bigot, hates the Bible, and insane. Any rational individual knows that those broad generalizations are inevitably wrong. I support the ACLU about one-third of the time. Am I anti-American, an anti-Christian bigot, a hater of the Bible, and insane? Hardly...
Have you ever even HEARD of the ACLU?
Of course.

Does this mean the Mormons DON'T own/run everything in Utah?
What a shock!
Had a relative who moved to SLC and claimed his wife could not land a job as she was not Mormon. Turns out that on her resume - she was willing to accept about twice the going wage for the work she was seeking.
She dropped the reference to salary - bam, she got a job.....They moved to Portland, so I guess that sez it all.
Like to visit the city, clean and easy to find your way around.
