Ben Stevens will probably get the job when his father croaks/retires.

Does the new Senator have Chancellor Palpatine's approval? He must be thoroughly checked out to make sure he isn't tainted by any Southern connections.

Why did Murkoski leave the Senate in the first place?

I think he didn't like being in the minority... he obviously didn't anticipate winning back the senate in '02.

I had no idea that Young was nearing 70. He certainly doesn't look that old...

IVO his age, I certainly agree that he's not the best candidate.

"Why did Murkoski leave the Senate in the first place? I've never seen anything about his reasons"

He said he missed being home, and his wife didn't like living in DC any longer. I hated to see him leave the US Senate, but we could have a lot worse for a governor....

Having lived in Wasilla and Ketchikan for a good part of my life, I'd think the worst drawback to being Alaska's Senator would be having to stay in D.C. most of the year. Think about it...you're from the most beautiful place on the planet earth (and probably the most free) and you end up having to live in Washington! YUK! The skeptic might doubt it, but it would be a sacrifice for any Alaskan to have to factor in before accepting such an appointment. That's probably why Palin didn't bite.
