It is hypocritical because Lott's critics get to decide what his words mean.

Sorry, there is little doubt what his words meant. Lott uttered them, and you don't have to parse 1948 to figure out the significance. The question is, did Lott understand what his words meant? If he did, he's a bigot. If he didn't, he's an idiot. Personally, I lean towards the theory that he's an idiot, because there far more anecdotal evidence in that direction. But he has somehow managed to lurch through this affair throwing supporters off his wagon at every turn, until only a few are left hanging on to the slimmest of rationalizations...

It is hypocritical, but not for Clintie's reason. It is hypocritical because Lott's critics get to decide what his words mean. That is a leftist position.

It's a leftist position that the Republicans have now taken against one of their own.

I've seen countless posts on numerous threads from so-called "conservatives" because they believe that Lott is not a conservative. Hogwash! He is far more conservative than Bush and yet, because a small of number of people reacted to his words, now even the Republicans have jumped on the same bandwagon as the leftists in calling for his resignation.
