What a bunch of rambiling crappola. The author said nothing! Guess he was given the topic and a number of column inches he needed to fill. The title doesn't even go with the content. Poor devil of a sub-sub - wait, wrong author.

I only made it half way through. It is tripe. His criticisms are fabricated... woven out of air as he breaks wind.

What amazes me is the whole array of opinions on things you will find on FreeRepublic.
There will be many that stop by to this thread to whole-heartedly agree with the writers comments. Almost any movie, book, or object that you might think is universally enjoyed has a few raving against it. Being kind of a closet pragmatist I don't see that as a bad thing. Just interesting.
I got my free pass with the DVD set. I'll probably pick up a ticket for me and my wife on Tuesday for a Thursday show. I don't like the (first day) crowds.

I just realized the guy's problem is HE WAS NOT INVITED TO ANYTHING. And is so totally irrelevant.

What a bunch of rambiling crappolaNicely put.
This article should be titled...."What a smart man I think I am".......Or... "I am full of myself"......Or.... "Watch me pretend to be above it all".
Crappola is a good description.

Most movie pre-publicity is anything but secretive. Often videos are distributed, and screenings are open to everybody from the regional press to the wage slave who sells you a copy of the original novel, in an unattractive new film tie-in cover. But press and public previews, just as with The Fellowship of the Ring, have been severely restricted...< snip > For The Two Towers they'll have to queue up with us multiplex cattle to see the whole thing. Awww... his feeling are hurt. We didn't get a ticket to the VIP screenings.

The author probably hates all of the good vs evil plotline, without all of those "gray areas" that liberals love so much.

Oh dear:
As it is, The Two Towers features a digitised Gollum, that grumpy, tortured creature, "dubbed" over a performance by Andy Serkis, last spotted in 24 Hour Party People playing grumpy, tortured record producer Martin Hannett, who would, if alive today, undoubtedly be using digital recording techniques.
His English Composition teacher just rolled over in her grave.

So, if I understand this review correctly:
1) He hasn't read the book.
2) He hasn't seen the movie.
3) His nose is out of joint.
This is pretty much par for the course for The Independent.

The sad truth is, the success of this trilogy has nothing much to do with film-making. There are just so many Tolkienies out there that it simply can't fail, such fans easily outnumbering the handful of loons who affect confusion between the movie's title and the World Trade Centre. Nonsense. If it was lousy, the word would be out in no time and it would arrive with a thud like a falling troll. In fact the series (at lest the first one) is remarkably well done, visually stunning and faithful to the book.
The fact is this guy sounds like a critic who is desperately looking for some reason to pan it because he never liked Tolkien in the first place. Failing to find any, he resorts to general badmouthing about hypothetical next blockbusters and the way it was released.

...So an even halfway competent adaptation is worth hyping.
A good story doesn't necessarily equal a good movie. look at the Dune fiascos.

Yuch! What an awfully written Review.
I wonder whether this clown had a deadline to meet, the subject assigned to him by the paper's Editor, a swollen jaw from being repeatedly hit by some deranged soccer hooligan, and a bad hangover from the after-the-match pub-crawling.

This is not even a review! This smarmy uthour just has his panties in a wad over the box-office behemoth that LOTR:TTT has become before it even releases. I went todqy to get my pre-sale tickets for TTT, and all but two of the showings on the 18th were already sold out.

a gloriously inappropriate way to promote the world's favourite modern pagan epic. I stopped reading after this. And it's "Chirstmas", not "X-mas." Offending pagans! Oh, dear!
Perhaps reparations are in order.
