Rain, hail fall along Gulf Coast; windy rainstorm pushes into Pacific Northwest The Associated Press
12/12/02 5:53 PM
Stormy weather spread across the Gulf Coast on Thursday while strong winds and heavy rain moved into the Pacific Northwest. The rest of the nation had calm weather.
The Gulf Coast system was most intense in Texas. Heavy rain fell in Houston, and Brenham recorded 1.62 inches of rainfall by midday. Several locations reported large hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and a tornado watch was issued for Austin County.
The severe weather moved into Louisiana later in the day, and watches were posted for the southwest part of the state. Lighter rain fell in north Texas, the southern Plains and east into Florida.
A strong front off the Pacific brought strong winds and rain to the Northwest coast. Gusts over 50 mph were recorded in Bellingham, Wash., and sustained winds blew at 30 mph across northwest Washington. Rain fell from Washington to northern California.
Snow fell in the northern Rockies, and Aspen, Colo., and other central Rockies towns reported light snow showers. Low clouds and fog lingered in interior valleys of California. Fresno, Calif., reported visibility down to an eighth of a mile.
Coastal California and the Southwest were dry and fair. Cloudy but mostly dry skies dominated the Great Lakes, Tennessee Valley and Northeast. Light rain and snow was scattered across northern New England.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a midday high of 83 in Marathon, Fla., to a morning low of 3 below zero in Grey Bull, Wyo. With the humidity, the temperature in Marathon felt like 91 degrees.

I just set out 4,000 square feet of tarping, changed the oil on the generator, and checked a few culverts. We're as ready as we're gonna be.

Oops! Gotta sharpen and gas up the chainsaws.
Somebody's got to be ready to clear the road.

The difference between here and the Gul Coast is average slope and the composition of the coastal mountains. My property has many slopes well over 45° (some are nearly vertical). The substrate is cruddy sandstone (gophers can dig it). It erodes like crazy.

Local radar here shows the heavy rain about 2 hours off shore of Humboldt County. 2 to 4 inches predicted here in Eureka and 10 to 15 in the Kings Range South of us. Should open the local rivers up for fishing.

They say we'll get rain here in the south on Sat. so I just repaired the patio roof for my best friend's mom.

The reality of the new third street bridge is that it will probably not be flooded if and when downtown Napa gets flooded.
Remember downtown Napa was not elevated, just the bridge was.

Oops! Gotta sharpen and gas up the chainsaws. You evil conservative! You would saw up those tree gods when they are felled by Gaia or whatever just to drive past in your internal combustion engine?

My sister just went through the big storm that hit Guam with 180 mph winds.
Maybe this storm will give San Fran the enema it needs?

Our radar did not show anything off the coast until about 3:45 pm and Shazaam there it was.

I hope some of that rain makes it into south end of the west coast. Love the sun, but we could use a little wet stuff too. Besides, all these sunny, 70 degree days are getting a little tiresome :o

The yellow and red returns have come ashore at Cape Mendicino and will be here soon. It is calm and the rain has slacked off the last few minutes here in Eureka and that is a BAD sign. Channel 3 Weather guy Jim Bernard said the Eel River could be at flood stage by tommorow nite
BTW...A women caught a 52 pound Salmon on the Chectco River in the last few days

Sure hope they make it down to San Diego. The last three winters have been dry with only three inches of rain last year. Lets hear it for some rain.

Is the HWY.29 Cafe still in business? That was one of the good things about going to Mare Island. The HWY 29. What a great place the diner was. The Red Hen just north of Trancas was good to.
