A heretic? Everytime I hear that word I think of the Middle Ages. Are people still officially declared heretics?

"Are people still officially declared heretics?"

Not often enough.

Heresy is an emotionally loaded term that is often misused. It is not the same thing as incredulity, schism, apostasy, or other sins against faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states, "Incredulity is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent to it. Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and Catholic faith, or it is likewise an obstinate doubt concerning the same; apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith; schism is the refusal of submission to the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him" (CCC 2089).

To commit heresy, one must refuse to be corrected. A person who is ready to be corrected or who is unaware that what he has been saying is against Church teaching is not a heretic.

A person must be baptized to commit heresy. This means that movements that have split off from or been influenced by Christianity, but that do not practice baptism (or do not practice valid baptism), are not heresies, but separate religions. Examples include Muslims, who do not practice baptism, and Jehovah’s Witnesses, who do not practice valid baptism.

Finally, the doubt or denial involved in heresy must concern a matter that has been revealed by God and solemnly defined by the Church (for example, the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, the sacrifice of the Mass, the pope’s infallibility, or the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary).

Great Heresies

Her obstinate, post-baptismal denial of the truth about abortion as taught by Pope John Paul II, the U.S. Bishops and her own bishop, Adam Cardinal Maida, renders her a heretic and scandal to the faithful.

It should be interesting to watch her innauguration ceremony. After the swearing in ceremony, there is usually a benediction given. Take note of the priest's name. We can then write to him and the archbishop, inquiring when Granholm will be excommunicated from the church.

Sorry to say that many politicians both Democratic and Republican, have chosen to go for that "pro choice" vote. In NY, this year, the Right To Life party candidate was a family loving man who works for a diocesan newspaper. Despite having the highest vote count after the Republican/Democratic/Independent candidates, it still fell short of the 50,000 needed to keep that line on the ballot. My consolation is in knowing that the Liberal party fell short too and will be removed from the ballot, as well.

And you can bet she got there with the votes of a significant number of so called "Catholic" voters. Just like those who persist in returning the likes of Ted Kennedy every time he runs.

Ultimately though, the absence of a clear and unambiguous expostion of the responsibilities of Catholic voters from both clergy and hierarchy is what is assisting this scandal immeasurably. Chaput is a lone voice in the wilderness.

Don't blame me or my county. We went 62% with 52% turnout.

Blame the state employees. They won it for Grandstand. She took Eaton County(52% in a GOP area), drilled Posthumus in Ingham(60% - usually dems get 55%), and held Posthumus to 53% in Clinton county(usually 58%).

Burn the witch! She's having orgies with Satan, and is making people sick! She transforms into a cat, and flies around on a broomstick at night!

Of course, this leads to an interesting question: If a woman is a witch, and has sex with the Devil, should she abort the baby or not?

My thought exactly. They should boot her out of the church. BTW, I'm not Catholic. But they should boot her out of the church.

Here in Pennsylvania, when Tom Ridge was Governor, his parish priest in Erie announced that he would not be able to receive the Sacraments as long as he held his pro-choice views. One lone voice . . . .

Title: The Witch

From: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Transcribed By: unknown

Bedevere stands on a stage in front of a large crowd of wild villagers.

Villager: We have found a witch, may we burn her?

Crowd: BURN!! BUUUURN HER!

Bedevere: But how do you *know* she is a witch?

Villager: She looks like one!

Other Villagers: Yeah! She looks like one!!!

Bedevere: Bring her forward.

(a young woman is pushed through the crowd of villagers to the platform. She

is dressed all in black, has a carrot tied around her face on top of her nose,

and a black paper hat on her head. She talks funny because her nose is

closed by the carrot.)

Witch: I'm not a witch, I'm not a witch!

Bedevere: Er,...but you are dressed as one.

Witch: THEY dressed me up like this.

Villagers: No! nooo! We didn't! We didn't!

Witch: And this isn't my nose, it's a false one!

(Bedevere lifts up the carrot to reveal the woman's real nose, which is in

fact rather small.)

Bedevere: Well?

One Villager: Well, we did do the nose.

Bedevere: The nose?

Villager: And the Hat. But she's a witch!

Villagers: Yeah! Burn her! Burn! Burn her!

Bedevere: Did you dress her up like this?

Villagers: NO! No, no, no, no, no, no...

One Villager: yes.

Villagers: yes. yes. yes. A bit. yes. a bit. a bit.

Another Villager: (hopefully) She has got a wart...

Bedevere: What makes you think she is a witch?

Villager: Well, She turned me into a newt!!

(pause)

Bedevere: a newt?

(long pause)

Villager: I got better...

Villagers: BURN HER anyway! BURN! BURN! BURN HER!

Bedevere: Quiet, quiet, quiet, QUIETA There are ways of *telling* whether she

is a witch!

Villagers: Are there? What? Tell us, then! Tell us!

Bedevere: Tell me. What do you do with witches?

V: BUUUURN!!!!! BUUUUUURRRRNN!!!!! You BURN them!!!! BURN!!

Bedevere: And what do you burn apart from witches?

Villager: More Witches!

Other Villager: Wood.

Bedevere: So. Why do witches burn?

(long silence)

(shuffling of feet by the villagers)

Villager: (tentatively) Because they're made of.....wood?

Bedevere: Goooood!

Other Villagers: oh yeah... oh....

Bedevere: So. How do we tell whether she is made of wood?

One Villager: Build a bridge out of 'er!

Bedevere: Aah. But can you not also make bridges out of stone?

Villagers: oh yeah. oh. umm...

Bedevere: Does wood sink in water?

One Villager: No! No, no, it floats!

Other Villager: Throw her into the pond!

Villagers: yaaaaaa!

(when order is restored)

Bedevere: What also floats in water?

Villager: Bread!

Another Villager: Apples!

Another Villager: Uh...very small rocks!

Another Villager: Cider!

Another Villager: Uh...great gravy!

Another Villager: Cherries!

Another Villager: Mud!

Another Villager: Churches! Churches!

Another Villager: Lead! Lead!

King Arthur: A Duck!

Villagers: (in amazement) ooooooh!

Bedevere: exACTly!

Bedevere: (to a villager) So, *logically*...

Villager: (very slowly, with pauses between each word)

If...she...weighs the same as a duck......she's made of wood.

Bedevere: and therefore...

(pause)

Villager: A Witch!

All Villagers: A WITCH!

(they do consequently weigh her across from a duck on Bedevere's largest

scale, and she does indeed weigh the same as the duck.)
