The metaphor of "shooting the wad" is so vulgar, its unfortunate to see it gain such wide currency, like "it sucks."

It isn't really vulgar. The original metaphor comes from firearms prior to the early 19th century, in which the round bullet could roll out of the barrel of the gun and had to be held in by a cloth wad.
