Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Surely I'm not the only one to remember how the Germans were wringing their hands a few years ago about how the Italians and the Spaniards were going to drag them down....

Socialism and prosperity just don't co-exist.

The Government's share in GDP has risen from 39 per cent to 48 per cent.

The welfare state. They ain't spending on defense, that's for sure.

Unemployment has increased from 150,000 to about four million.

Minimum wage laws can be a b*tch, can't they?

What? I'm pretty sure that the Germans have assured us that they've nailed down this whole "social democracy" thing, and they can be rich socialists.

After all, wishing will make it so, right? ;)

I'm pretty sure that the Germans have assured us that
they've nailed down this whole "social democracy" thing

" as the country's Red-Green coalition
fights recession with tactics popular with
socialist administrations of the past. "

Well, then that oughtta fix it, nein?  <chortle>

Instead of West Germany bringing East Germany into the fold of democratic prosperity, it looks as if West Germany has decided to join East Germany in righteous poverty.

In Spain, where the Conservative government has stimulated impressive economic growth and delivered on budget...

Germany isn't the "sick man of Europe" - France is.

It's France - not Germany - where young Moslem immigrants now gang-rape young local women so frequently as a "rite of passage" that it has inspired a noun ("le tournant") and commonly torch transit buses and even private cars.
