How Great Thou Art

I have childhood memories of my mom singing this song while playing her piano.

Funny, even now it's one of my favorite "non Christmas" hymns.

I have to go back tonight, but I'm out working in the yard for a bit today. It's getting out of hand, and as you know we have to cut the grass around here at least until Thanksgiving!

National Animal of Canada

The Russians have a bear, the Brits a lion and the Americans a mighty eagle. In Canada, the national animal is the beaver. Renowned for its hard work, even temper, industrious nature and - oh, who are we kidding. The beaver is a forty-pound water rat whose most heroic trait is that he thinks to slap his tail and warn his buddies before he runs away. And cripes, it's not like Canadians were short on choices. The country is filled with nobler, more awe-inspiring animals. The timebr wolf. The grizzly bear. The mountain lion. The woodland bison. Heck, even a caribou or a muskox would have been better that a buck-toothed, webbed-toed, waddly-happy rodent. But nooooo, when Canada's national animal was finally made official in 1975, it was the beaver that was chosen.

Question: If a lion, an eagle and a beaver were pitted against one another,
wouldn't that be cool?

Canadians love their furry mascot. Love him to pieces. Literally. Provinces like Manitoba spend hundreds of thousands of dollars every year blowing up dams, dynamiting beavers and sending bulldozers in a desperate attempt to stop the soggy little pest (or, rather, "proud national symbol"). In fact, Manitoba recently upped its bounty on beavers, with some communities offering another $20 a head on top of the current $15. (Idea for a fast-paced CBC action show: The Bounty Hunter, Manitoba Style." He always gets his Castor canadenis!")

A true story from out bulging files on beaver crimes. In 1992, a beaver dam flooded train tracks northeast of Thunder Bay, derailing a train and killing two crew members. (Idea for a fast-paced CBC docudrama: Killer Water rats: Evil or Just Plain Bad?")

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Good: Your hubby and you agree, no more kids
Bad: You can't find your birth control pills
Ugly: Your daughter borrowed them

Good: Your son studies a lot in his room
Bad: You find several porn movies hidden there
Ugly: You're in them

Good: Your husband understands fashion
Bad: He's a cross dresser
Ugly: He looks better than you

Good: Your son's finally maturing
Bad: He's involved with the woman next door
Ugly: So are you

Good: You give the birds and bees talk to your daughter
Bad: She keeps interrupting
Ugly: With corrections
