I would consider the island nation of Malta. It is spectacular, conservative (very pro-life and Catholic), fun, and very well preserved, not too expensive, very much like Italy must have been like before the sixties.

I love old stuff so a trip to see old civilization stuff would be great.I also like the rain forest in CR Make up your mind whether you want to see nature and or old stuff. Of course you will see both, but it's better not to split your interests.

I would be very comfortable renting in southern France for four months.

When I was 10, my grandparents took me on a cruise around the world on a freighter. Took about 3 1/2 months. Had my own stateroom. Stopped in Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Malaya, India, Ethiopia, Suez Canal, Egypt, Italy, France.

I have heard that mentioned in a web site I found that is mainly for selling retirement homes. I will look into it a little more.
Actually Europe would be great since we could see too many too mention old castles and stuff. Being a builder I would love to see castles and even ols roads and bridges.
Whats the weather like there in summer?

I spent a summer in Ireland and it was incredible. I've always wanted to go back.

Costa Rica rocks. But don't tell anyone, because it's still not discovered.
I think the odds are extremely high that I will eventually retire there.
Not much old stuff to see there, though. If you're looking for ancient civilizations you have to visit someplace north or south of CR.

winodog, my wife and I have spent various time lengths in Australia, once for nearly a year.
The natives speak English, the sun always shines and our dollar is worth about 1.84 to theirs, always a nice thing when on vacation. The Aussies still pretty much like Americans.
There are multitudes of things to do and see, from old historic prisons in Tasmania to the Great Barrier Reef in the north of Queensland.
The food is wonderful, fruit is inexpensive and always available. Your son will be agog over the surf and if you are there in "footie" season, nothing beats the wild atmosphere of a rugby match!
Negatives? Sharks, stingers, crazy drivers and a touch of socialism.

Southern Holland or Southern Belguim. Well organized tourist bureaus with helpful staff. Polite intelligent people, many of whom speak passable English. Great food, wine, and beer. Beautiful small towns with rural small businesses. Good lodging with real families in pensions. Cycling, history, quaint museums in small towns, and fabulous dog training clubs (to be seen to be believed).

My choice would be old stuff and I want to eat fresh fruits, veggies and fish. It would be great to walk to a outdoor market and buy stuff in the morning.
My friend from Croatia tells me stories about how laid back it is there on the coast(when the bullets are not flying)

Actually, Greece is an excellent spot for an extended stay. You can't beat the "old stuff" and the place is friendly, and amazingly uncrowded outside of Athens.
Forget surfing, though!

If you are interested in using a central location from which to make weekend or weeklong trips consider Vienna or Munich. It puts you in the center of Europe. From there it's easy to get to Prague, Budapest Switzerland, and Rome.

My favorite country is Thailand. The people are wonderful and the living is inexpensive.

I would be very comfortable renting in southern France for four months. That would be my suggestion as well....especially the mid winter months. Beautiful landscape and loads of history.....the Avignon or Gran Massif area would be nice. Plus you can travel all over Europe if you wish. If you weren't taking your lad, I'd opt for Prague or Budapest..LOL ;>))

You might consider American Hawaii providing you are willing not to come back to wherever you are! ;-)
