Well well well, look at all the freepers running in circles to get big Mommy government to protect them. What a precious moment. I guess they're finally seeing why government regulations are needed after all.

No, you are confused. The concept of "limited government" is completely different from the concept of "no government".

I thought it was a piece from the Onion when I first read it, or maybe BSNN.

As long as they're instrument rated, I have no problem with this. :-)

just so long as you walk away from it, it supposedly qualifies as a good landing.

A good landing is one you walk away from. A great landing is one where they can use the plane again.

Bingo. There is a bright line between common sense and insanity. This misbegotten idea has that line well in the rearview mirror.

I know - how about lame horses in the Kentucky Derby! That would be only fair, right?

This reminds me of a science-fiction story, the author of which I can't recall, in which the government prevented those with exceptional (or any) skill from utilizing them, so that the less skilled didn't feel bad. Ballerinas wore chains, the handsome and beautiful wore masks, and everyone had shock chips in their heads to prevent them from questioning the status quo.

Anyone remember that one? Sounds like a Philip K. Dick story...

Here in Houston a year or so ago we had a person die because they were shot and called 911 and the 911 operator was deaf and it took like 20 minutes before the message got across that he needed an ambulance and he bled to death by the time someone finally got there.

Flight attendants aren't glorified waitresses. They're there for safety. I want them to be able to get to the emergency exit quickly.

Waitress In The Sky (The Replacements)

She don't wear no pants, she don't wear no tie
Always on the ball, she's always on strike
Strutting up the aisle, big deal you get to fly
You ain't nothing but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothing but a waitress in the sky.... mm...mm...

Paid my fare, don't wanna complain
You get to me always out of champagne
Treat me like a bum, don't wear no tie
'Cause you ain't nothing but a waitress in the sky

As an admitted spaz and klutz you would think that I would be unable to perform brain surgery. But now there is hope!

I would like to perform my first operation on the author of this piece. I won't charge. The search for the hole in the head of this individual can be classified as a charitable activity.

I will then perform my patented brain transplant using the "screw top" technique developed by my mentor, (trivia anyone?)

ROFL! Well, I guess we have the technology to implant the appropriate digital instruments into the brain. AI, Altimeter, ASI, VSI, TC, DG, Clock, NAV receiver, ILS/GS receiver, GPS, ADF...and a 720 channel COM and marker beacon, of course.

Check out Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut. One of the stories is about just the scenario you describe. I don't like Vonnegut's vacuous existentialism and undisguised misanthropy but he spins a good yarn and occasionally hits one out of the park.

Thanks to you both for the pings. All I can say is:

¡Ay caramba!

I thought CASA is the Australian authority, and CAA is the UK one?

I have a good buddy who is a tower controller, and is the most laid back guy I know, until some piece of computer equipment fails him... then he explodes. He's away at the war right now (reservist). Anyway, he has to pass a Class II physical at annual interval, IIRC.

The FAA has bunches of older controllers who have a hard time with the physicals and have to be decertified, and assigned to desk work. In this country (USA), where the 60-year-airline retirement has withstood legal challenges, this kind of nonsense probably can't pass.

At least, not unless the Democrats get both the White House and the Senate for five or ten years to put these sorts of judges in, eh.

Flight Attendants aren't glorified waitresses

Well, you know why they're there, but ask any FA: the flying (pax) public sure as hell doesn't.

I expect we will see more challenges like this, as people continue to get porkier and the heffalumps band together into the latest victim group. Paugh! (I could use to lose some pounds myself, it would help my rate of climb).

Anyway... in a weird way it is encouraging that it is not only our nation where the discrimination PC police and the lawyers and courts are out of their suffering minds.

d.o.l.

I thought 'flying blind' was a metaphor...now I find out it's just sound non-discriminatory public flyways policy.

In conclusion, we definitely need government to lead us into the promised land; thankfully, they're never blind.

But even if they were, it wouldn't be a problem. ;^)

Nosiree, blind's as good as seeing; dead's as good as alive-- just ask Al Gore.
