Yep, if I were still in, I'd feel much safer on a Tico or Areigh Burke.

I hope we warned Taiwan about this... Last I heard all 4 Kidd class (mine - DDG-994 USS Callaghan)ships were headed to Taiwan.. I had always heard that against AAW targets Kidds were fine (upgraded from Spruance) but were seriously deficient against ASW threats.

Yeah, Fords training must be working. They are going to phase out the Expedition--probably as an effort to get rid of all PC-incorrect SUVs/

I have a friend that was stationed on the Kitty Hawk and he said the real reason is that the Admiral was videotaped throwing a candy bar wrapper on the deck of the aircraft carrier. Yep...you guessed it, he was busted for Kitty Litter : )

Add another one to the list of carrier readiness problems.

nope - you got the wrong vehicle - sales on Expedition are quite good - it is the Excursion that will be discontinued - bigger than the Suburban and won't fit in Suzy Homemaker's garage.

The Kitty Hawk is 41 years old. That is absolutely ancient in the life of warships. The solution is not to keep patching up decrepit old tubs like her but to build new carriers faster.

The new ships promise to be 'stealthy'.

Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire are behind all that PC training at Ford, didn't you know that? (/sarcasm off)

For all the talk about "We should change the servicemen to fit the service, not change the service to fit the servicemen," I hear from old-timers today, I think I detect a little bit of "screw the serviceman to cover the service's exposed hindquarters" here.

It is not an easy thing to make 0-6 in any service, and still harder to get a command at that level. This is what puts someone on track for star rank. Such basic things as keeping things equipment in order and keeping the supply system stocked (so far as budgets allow) are the thing today's peacetime, Business School-trained officer corps is naturally good at (as opposed to actual combat operations).

I'm betting that bull**** training requirements and some kind of understaffing or undersupply are the culprits here. Put simply, men of this rank generally would not allow those under his command to sit around doing nothing. They may chip paint for 16 hours a day, but they would not be doing nothing as this inspector's report seems to suggest they had been doing...

And I will mention that the officer corps will probably be infected by Clintonism for at least another 10 to 20 years, as his influence had an effect on training from Boot Camp all the way to the senior service schools...

His ghost haunts us still...

That's a destroyer, not a carrier. ASW helos will be stored in the hangar aft of the mast.

What difference does that make?

It can make a big difference, starting with morale.

No excuse for poor maintenance.

True enough. But let's look at the reason for poor maintenance. OVERDEPLOYMENTS and MISSED DOWN TIMES. This due to the fact neither GHW Bush, Dick Cheney, Bill Clinton, Bill Cohen, GW Bush, nor Donald Rumsfeld have a clue as to what it takes to run a standing ready military. By the time the Bush SR term was over the military was showing damage from his and Cheney's engineering. In short Bush had a fine military machine given him and wasted not one second with his friends taking it to a functional level that made Carter look good.

Rummy needs to step down he is not the man for the job. This is the second carrier to show substancial neglect in the past year. Rummy is to dumb to learn from mistakes. Bush needs to go before congress and the senate to demand a substancial increase in troop size and money for upkeep. There is no excuse for poor maintenance. There is also no excuse for the pathetic military policies that have been allowed and even cheered on for the past 13.5 years. Mister President & Congress GET OFF THE POT!

I hate to think of what our military will be like with 8 years of GW Bush & then a DEM. 9/11 was just a reminder of why we must maintain a sizable and ready military. Bush want's military response without the responsibilities of the upkeep, size, equipment, and training it takes to achieve it.

Bush SR wanted military response without the responsibilities of the upkeep, size, equipment, and training it takes to achieve it.

Bill Clinton wanted military response without the responsibilities of the upkeep, size, equipment, and training it takes to achieve it.

Do I see a pattern here?

Rummy needs to step down he is not the man for the job.

I certainly gotta agree that Rummy is too dazzled by high-tech bells and whistles, and initiated curtailment of our proven capabilities to finance his toys. Klintoon took advantage of that policy to implement his own military social-engineering agenda. Makes it difficult to distinguish one from the other.
