Actually, neo-con and paleo-con have these days entered into the code-speech set of the neo-nazis. Some of them have found that the old "88" and "14 words" is too crude and sounds unintellectual, not to mention that everyone are on to it.

I am a proud neo-conservative. First of all I grew up and was raised in the birthplace of neo-conservatism: New York City. I am a huge fan of the Kristols and the Podhoretzes. Neoconservatism is the best of our movement. It is the one that is most open minded and receptive to beneficial change. It is the part of our movement that puts the individual and his/her rights above all else. Libertarianism is much more in agreement with the neocons than the paleocons. Speaking of paleocons, how are they devoted to Chicago school economics when they are overwhelmingly against free trade and skilled immigration not to mention foreign influences and technology? Which brings me to my beef with paleoconservatism. Most paleos ( not all) are incredibly narrow minded and ultra-nationalistic. Like it or not we are not going to return the U.S. to 19th Century values. And charges of bigotry against many paleos are legitimate. Joe Sobran for example recently spoke in front of an orgaization that denies the Holocaust. Sam Francis has repeatedly expressed his low opinion of ethnic minorities and Chilton Williamson still thinks that Eastern European immigrants should not have been allowed to come in the early 1900s. I am sorry but people who idolize the likes of De Maistre and Gobineau are not going to recieve any kind words from me. Yes neoconservatives were liberals back when being a liberal meant support for equal opportunity, freedom and anti-communism. Yes we even supported and still support some aspects of the Great Society. Well some of the social programs made problems worse and Civil Rights was turned into affirmative action so now we are fighting against the liberals not mugged by reality. Ronald Reagan was the original neo-conservative politican, a former liberal who became a conservative when he did not change but liberalism did. Finally neoconservatism is triumphant. Soon we will be able to drop our prefix and call ourselves conservatives just like Norman Podhoretz stated we should.

Dual loyalty. Nothing angers me more than when a person's loyalty to our nation is questioned because of their ethnic background. I am an American of Chinese descent so I am a little familiar with this type of bigotry as are many of my Asian and Jewish American friends.

As much as I disagree with the neocons, I have to say I appreciate your post. It's comprehensive, thorough, and honest.

I've always thought neocons were basically trying to "conserve" the status quo of the last 30 or 40 years, that status quo being a liberal one based on this country's recent electoral history. Neoconservatives are basically liberals who believe in a strong military (used for overseas adventures) and lower taxes, and they reject the excesses of the Hard Left.

Actually we ARE conservatives. We do recognize a place for a limited welfare state but we also acknowledge the importance of reviving the dormant republican virtue tradition in this country and the necessity of taking the cultural high ground away from the liberals. Our signal contribution was to make conservatism intellectually respectable. Almost all the best ideas have come from conservatives in the last 20 years or so. One is hard pressed to name one original idea from the Left since that time. There is therefore absolutely no reason to beware of us. The only people who need to tremble are liberals and that is since we came from the Left we are familiar with how they think and are equipped with the means to paint them into a corner. I used to think we needed a pre-fix but in view of the changes since the Cold War, its unnecessary. The last thing conservatives need are internal divisions and let's concentrate our fire on our real adversary instead of on each other.

True enough. And for an equal number of years (actually, about 14 or so -- since Reagan left office), the paleos have been whining about foreign "adventures."

The simple fact is that we are the only true superpower in the world. If we do not take a leadership role, the resulting power vacuum will simply encourage the Husseins and bin Ladens of the world to pull their shenanigans. The alternative is not tenable -- like it or not, we are simply not self-sufficient enough in raw materials and manufactured goods to maintain the standard of living to which we have become accustomed. We need world markets to both buy in and sell in. We cannot go stick our heads in the sand anymore (or in any other place, especially the orifices that the paleos prefer.)

Sure Reagan was neocon-influenced, but to what degree relative to paleo-con influenced? I'd say da Gippa was 99% Paleo and 1% Neo.

Reagan was "99% paleocon influenced" eh? Wow. That explains why Pat Buchanan was his Sec. of Commerce, Samuel Francis his Attorney General, and Robert Novack his speechwriter. His favorite paper was "Stormfront" and his favorite magazine "The New American."

I guess I just dreamed about all those neocons in his adminstration, like Jeanne Kirkpatrick and Richard Pearle.

Actually, the dinosaurs were alive during the Mesozoic Era and were quite advanced compared to the life forms of the Paleozoic, which consisted mostly of brachiopods (little, clam-like mollusks) and trilobites (scurrying, roach-like, bottom-feeders).

Well the reason some of us are a little sensitive to ethnic accusations is because they have been thrown at us. I apologize if you never intended an ethnic implication but plenty of paleocons do. Especially when they talk about Zionist domination of neoconservatism or foreign students and engineers stealing our technology.
