The police will not release specific information about the cause of the officers death or the location of the wound. Thus it is certainly within the realm of possibility that he was killed by friendly fire.

Wrong, wrong and wrong. From the link in post #125:

Taylor died of a single gunshot from behind, and the bullet matched Matthews' imported gun, said Rick Walters, an investigator with the Stark County coroner's office. The bullet entered from behind and traveled to his chest.

From the coroner, it wasn't friendly fire. From the link in post #215:

I think people need to understand that, as in any eclectic population, FR has some extremists. We have all felt the frustration of overbearing government, the seeming arrogance of our so-called public servants, and felt the sting of righteous anger when our liberties were threatened. Some of us handle those setbacks well; some don't.

That this unfortunate FReeper chose to express his frustrations through what is ultimately a suicidal (and homicidal) act does NOT reflect on Free Republic. I'm sure his frustrations were in place long before he encountered this web site, and his decision to forfeit his life was little influenced by his registration here.

Nevertheless, two people are dead in a nightmarish collision between ideals and reality, a conflict that never should have taken place.

A number one rule in politics is that you never, ever give your opponent something he can use against you.

Or, as Clarence Thomas once said, don't give them the hammer to hit you with...

My consern with this topic is not how this tragedy ended, but how it started and escalated.Unless we know all there is about the initial stop, all we know are the end results.

Officer shot in the back, unbelievable.

The officer was probably going into a full retreat rather than go in with his weapon blazing. Next step would be to talk the guy out of his mindset and his weapon. Nobody gets hurt.

The backshooter got what he deserved.

Traffic laws are adjudicated in administrative courts which are not subject to constitutional review.

You're off your gob.

Uh, the coroner already said that Taylor died of a gunshot would to the back from Matthew's gun. I think there are sufficient facts here to place the blame on Matthews for the time being, unless something proves otherwise from police videos or eyewitness accounts. So far, the events described are entirely consistent with the rant from Matthews that someone posted here. Given that, I am strongly inclined to believe the official account. I am sure someone will make this into a conspiracy, but they must provide something other than suppositions to get any sane person to buy into such...

Generally, the way a person puts theory into practice is more important than whatever theories the person advocates/believes. Or as this is more commonly stated: actions speak louder than words.

And anyone is liable to make an uncharacteristic misjudgment, especially when under pressure--sometines with tragic consequences.

One more time, and I am not gonna say it happened here, just that we don't know.If a buddy of mine gets killed in an industrial accident at work, and I am the only witness,my account of the matter will reflect my buddy as an innocent bystander during a dangerous job,not that he was so stupid to put himself in a dangerous position that got him killed. The one telling the story is gonna reflect dearly on the beloved co-worker,usualy at all cost "if possible."

Should I post 'em again?

It's your call, oph, but it won't appease those who choose to see Reality distorted through the glasses of their ideology.
