Cvngr: Here's a fragment from an etymological site I hadn't seen before: ABYSS - "bottomless pit" / a [without] + byssos [bottom] / abussos, abysmus, abysm (Greek) / Abydos ["the underworld"]

http://209.238.146.143/hr.htm

This isn't surprising, since Abydos was supposed to be the site of the well of Osiris.

According to this site, the ancient name was "Abdjw":

So "Abydos" is a Hellenization of Pharaonic "Abdjw", and "abyss" derives in turn from "Abydos", the site of the well of Osiris. It's most pleasing to learn that. Thanks for the interesting question.

Speaking of Hathor, I visited the temple to Hathor in Dendara (not far from Abydos), and an Egyptian guide told me, "This is temple of Holy Cow!"

I would have appreciated having a couple of these bricks to bounce off the head of the nurse in charge during my delivery.

Jeez, we were eating spaghetti from earthen plates with a "Hathor" motif until this "came out"...

Gives a whole new meaning to the lyrics:

And your wise men don't know,

how it fee-eels,

To be thick...

as a brick.

Thanks for the post. I chased the link to Eureka Alert and passed a link to my archaelogist kinsman. He's not an Egyptologist, but one or another of his colleagues on faculty probably is.

Death obsessed Egyptians?

How about Death obsessed Christians? Ok, before the flamers go nuts on me....the whole thing is based on your expereince after you die.

The whole concept of any religion is to make the miserable existence here (a generalization--I love my existnence) look like its worth it.

Just because it was 5000 years ago doesnt make it more weird than what I did yesterday morning at Mass.
