It is almost blasphemy to post such a depressing story as this after getting the good "Nine for Nine" news about the rescue of the Pennsylvania miners.
Prison rape has be rampant for decades. It should be able to be controlled.

As the rapists can't exactly be punished by throwing them in prison (especially if they are facing life or a long term already), I'd suggest surgical castration as a penalty for rape committed in prison.

There are a couple of ways to control prison rape. One is castration, another is to keep the HIV population confined to their own area. Either would be effective.

Who better to co-sponsor the rape legislation than the Senate's resident expert on rape, Senator Kennedy? This would be like Hilary! sponsoring legislation aimed at illegal cattle future transations.

Whoop tee doo! Moldy news from NewsMax. You might think that prison rape could be controlled, but in a general population prison, with all those prisoners having access to other prisoners, with the presence of gangs-- easier said than done. And these prisoners are devious.

Still another step that might reduce prison rape is to remove from the prison population the large number of non-violent drug prisoners who are simply not able to defend themselves. They do not belong there in any case.
This is not a complete fix. There are non-violent thieves that truly deserve prison. They should be protected as well and possibly with half the population gone with the end of the War on Drugs, it might be easier for the guards to do their job.

Rape in prison should not be tolerated and it is much easier to control than the prison officials let on. Simply take all sexual predators out of the general population and confine them to their cells 24/7 for the remainder of their sentences - which of course, should be significantly lengthened if they are convicted of rape. Rape is a crime.

How in the world is that going to end any prison rape??

I'm surprised that a woman would come here and have such a cavalier attitude about rape. Is it okay with you just so long as it involves just men?
To: SamAdams76
And just how do prison officials know who all the sexual predators are? These prison rapists are not necessarily in prison for sex crimes. I'd say the majority are men who rape to control and dominate.
To: SamAdams76
You deliberately misinterpret my comments. "Whoop tee doo" was for NewsMax's moldy story, as you can read for yourself. It was not in reference to the act of rape. Jerk.
To: Clara Lou
It is easy enough to determine who is doing the raping in prison. Most guards can tell you exactly who they are. Besides, every square inch of a modern prison is covered with videocameras these days.

Your post did indicate to me a cavalier attitude regarding the subject at hand. If I misinterpreted you, then I apologize.

Sam, my husband worked for years a maximum security prison in Texas. Then he moved to a medium security unit to reduce the stress he was under. We spent a lot of time talking about the hepatitis going around among prisoners. From his stories, I can tell you that while the intention may have been to cover every square inch of the place with video cameras, that's not the reality-- in the new prisons or in the old ones. You can talk, talk, talk-- but you've never been there.

There's got to be a way to separate the sexual predators from the general population in prison. Throwing up our hands and saying it can't be done is not only wrong but it condemns our nation's prisoners to a hellish existence. Is it any wonder that many of them come out of prison so extremely bitter and hardened that they cannot function in civilized society again?
I'm not one for coddling criminals. Prison should be no picnic and nobody should want to go back after once having been there. But we should treat our prison inmates with some level of decency. We should not expose them to inhuman conditions. Every prisoner should have the right to serve out his sentence and pay his debt to society without having to worry about when he is going to get raped.
Granted, rape cannot be prevented 100% in prison. But once an inmate is caught committing a rape, he should be immediately removed from the general population for good. Eventually, the message will be delivered to the rest of the general population that rape will not be tolerated and those who commit it will be punished severely. This will result in a drastic decrease in prison rape. And not only will our prisons be a less stressful place for the inmates, but they will be a less stressful place for prison staff such as your husband.

Most guards can tell you exactly who they are. Besides, every square inch of a modern prison is covered with videocameras these days. Wrong on both accounts Sam. Some are known and some are not. Some areas are video taped, some are not. It could be stopped, if they had one officer to watch each inmate, instead of the current 1 to 300 ratio.

Let me ask you this: Do you have ANY firsthand knowledge of the inside of a prison? Any at all? I'm just guessing that your answer is going to be "no." Your lawsuit solution is incredibly s-t-u-p-i-d. Come back and comment after you've worked in a prison-- general population or medium security or high security. You'll have some knowledge and a different opinon.
To: Temple Owl
I think it would be appropriate for Bill Clinton to visit these prisons and given them a stern lecture on the dangers of rape. They should be able to identify with one who knows.

Sexual predators are kept on their own wing in English prisons under Section 42, which states that sexual predators will go into segregation for their own and other prisoners protection.
