I like shooting steel, DING! At Knob Creek I picked up an inch thick 10"x10" swinging target that can take hits from a high-power rifle. It must weigh 40 lbs. An 8mm digs a little deeper hole than 30-06, about 1/4 inch, a 7.62x39 only about 1/8". I expect after a few hundred rounds I'll punch clean thru it.

I spent my money at Knob Creek the same way you did! Unfortunately my heavy steel swinger is now off limits to rifle shooting. The 8mm did some awesome damage and the .223 actually cut the rod the plate is suspended from in half. I got tired of taking to work to be repaired in the welding shop. It works great for .40, .45, and .357 mag.

I got mine from the CMP. It has been a perfect shooter for me. I'd get a service grade, if you go with the Danish get the VAR barrel.

Thank you CapandBall, Shooter2.5.

This was alot of fun! Always have enjoyed a variety of shooting, and this was to say the least a variety.

I have only had the chance to shoot 3 highpower matches in the last year and it was fun doing the long gun thing again. My real strength is Bullseye and all the practice has helped the rifle shooting. Please ping me if another FReeper postal match is in the works.

Great shooting Charles Martel, all!!!

Still chasing the 'perfect break'...:-)

I only have two excuses for my stellar performance....I didn't have any practice time (and I really needed it) and the 10/22 has the worst iron sights I've ever had to use. This was fun, difficult and challenging. Glad I did it. Next time I will practice. Handguns are my real passion and I feel more comfortable with them, but I'm game for any type of match I have or can get equip for.

Thanks for setting this up. Congrats to all.

A friend bought the Danish and he's happy. The only thing was that the elevation screw was loose like I mentioned before. I bought the Service grade and It looks all right.
The prettiest one was the one my wife ordered before they separated them into grades. All new wood.
I don't think I would bother with the rack grades. After all that money you want something you can hit with.
The collector grades may mean something to some people but not to me. After a while, I think all of them will be worth much more than what we paid for them.
I always thought that I would buy one a year but I can't see doing that anymore. I have five including a match grade and a sniper. Also, I insisted that I have a match grade that I could shoot really well. For a person that needs other things I don't advise that. Get an AR for the matches and retire the Garands for fun and the occasional Garand match. The only modification I would do is a new aperature for the rear sight and make sure everything is tight. That's all they need.
Last thing. Buy a good leather sling and learn to use it.

Oddly enough, I don't go to Knob Creek to shoot (which may help explain the results I sent in on this match); I just go for the fun of watching everyone else who is there and finding the odd "good deal" lying around. Either way, it's a great event, and Lion Den Dan has lots of tent space very close by (hint, hint).

Is a postal match one where you shoot at your local club/range and email in the scores to whoever is "running it"? If so, please keep me posted when there is another one. Maybe I'll own an M1 Garand by then. I'm sure my scores will be terrible but what they heck.

Right, AStack - that's exactly what a postal match is. They're usually a lot of fun and humbling, all at the same time. :)

Cap, see the previous post to add AStack75 to the mailing list.

Powder..Patch..Ball FIRE!

I'm up for a blackpowder shoot, minimum requirements should be (suggestion here!) no modern inlines, iron sights, front stuffer (no cartridges), round ball, no shaders, chewstraps or slings.
I might be up for full military, I need to get my MAS 49/56 limbered up..

I agree. We certainly can't let a "What kind of rifle should I buy" thread get ahead. I have an IDPA match tomorrow and I have to dry fire since I'm too lazy to get to the range today.
Next week I have to take my Mini-14 out and see if I finally fixed the accuracy problems associated with the rifle. It's been an ongoing two year project. After that, I plan on finding out why I shoot to the right in the sitting position. I bought 2000 rounds of reloads that I have to use up. I also have to work on my standing position.

there's just something different about paper targets

Where logos is concerned, there is somehting different. I have hunted squirrels with him. He can acquire a squirrel with the naked eye that I can't find with a scope. When he sees it, it is dead.

Logos, you are one heck of a game shot.

Dan

Please be careful with your steel target. As the target is dimpled, a bullet can strike the edge of the dimple and ride the curved pocket right back to you with significant velocity. This can be hazzardous out to at least 100 meters in my personal and painful experience. Check with a steel fabrication company for some plate that is used in coal mine hoppers or perhaps in gravel pit hoppers. That stuff is harder than woodpecker lips and will cause the bullet to disintegrate on impact. Also, be certain the steel plate can swing freely. This helps absorb some of the energy and saves the plate.

Send me your private email and I will send you a picture of a simple swinging target you cand build or get fabricated cheaply.
