After seeing your L1A1, I can attest to the fact that your combat sights are more like a ghost ring set-up. They are definately larger than "minute of bad guy" , which is how I would characterize my Garand's sights.

A military shoot might allow me to show some improvement! I certainly know wht I would do differently next go-round.

Yeah, I really kind of like that set-up as it obscures less of the target and definitely aids in quick target acqusition. The drawback is that your're giving up a little precision. I think the trick with that kind of sight is to ignore the ring and allow your eye to instinctively put the target dead in the center, and then put the front site where you want it.

The ghost-ring is way, way better in a low-light situation too...

Good job, all!

I went to fire my set and completely missed the targets with both rifles (use scopes so much now that I've been neglecting the irons). Didn't have time to regulate them before the deadline.

Would you mind doing it again?

Give me a few weeks to catch up on some chores. In the meantime, lets get a consensus on the match rules.

My range on occasion sponsers Garand only, or as issued US military, or as issued any military, and as issued military pre 1950 (or some date).

Some other fun match ideas might involve carbines, requiring left and right hand shooting, requiring magazine change, or combined carbine/rifle/pistol shoots.

I went to the Knob Creek machine gun shoot this year in TN. Very cool, There was a sub-gun shoot which required shooting left & right handed. I decided right then & there I needed to work on shooting with my weak hand and eye. You never know when you may need to shoot around a corner thats not on the side you are use to shooting from.

Sorry I missed this one, but I have a lot of chunks of maple that I have to turn into a countertop - SOON! Hopefully I'll catch the next one.

Understood m1911, I know the pressure you are under, and where it is coming from. Hell hath no fury like a pregnant woman who's kitchen is under construction.

Even though I am left handed, and pretty good from either side with a side-arm, there is absolutely no way that I am ever going to be able to shoulder a longarm on the left side. I have tried, once or twice, and it is so unnatural as to nauseate me.

Especially with an autoloader spitting out big 30-06 casings, even wearing shooting glasses. I don't know how lefty rifle shooters handle autoloaders without a brass deflecter, and even then.

Ahem... The Knob Creek machine gun shoot is in Kentucky! :) I wish I'd known you were going to be there; the one last spring is the first one I've missed in a couple of years. They'll have another one in the fall, you know. Might work for a big FReeper-shooter meeting, eh?

I hesitate to say this about our recent shoot, but for me at least, there's just something different about paper targets. I've taken more than a few deer in my life, at various ranges, and it took more than one shot only once, and that was because of a hidden hog wire fence I didn't see until after it deflected the first shot. Somehow, I just can't seem to get interested in paper targets.

'Course, as Lion Den Dan kept shooting those bulls I got more interested - but it was too late!

oooooh, I hate it when I do that. Sorry Kentucky. It was a 500 mile drive from where I live, you'd think I'd know what state I was in.

That was my first time there, what a blast! I shot a BAR and a pedastel mounted 1919-A1. It was raining, mud six inches deep, and there was a line of 50 people waiting to pay $25-$50 for ten seconds on full-auto - and every one of them had the biggest sh!t-eating grin after they shot. I think Knob-Creek would be a GREAT freeper event.

I like shooting steel, DING! At Knob Creek I picked up an inch thick 10"x10" swinging target that can take hits from a high-power rifle. It must weigh 40 lbs. An 8mm digs a little deeper hole than 30-06, about 1/4 inch, a 7.62x39 only about 1/8". I expect after a few hundred rounds I'll punch clean thru it.

I do, too. What did you think of the venders and the sales shop? One of the times I was there I traded a Winchester Mod. 97 12 ga. for a Taurus .357 Mag. Not "even up," but I did okay.

Also got some camoflauge undies for the wife - but that's a different story. :)

Geez, that vendor tent must have been an acre big - biggest open-air gun show Ive ever seen. I picked up a few gun parts I needed, and some other odds and ends including a switch-blade (must be a Kentucky thing - I always thought they were illegal). I could have spent all day just walking around the vendor area. Next time I go I'll be taking a cart with me.

And speaking of girls-n-guns, I've never seen so much eye-candy in cut-off BDUs and teeshirts.

Another ironic thing I noticed while there. A couple of local cops were patroling around, they had Sigs on there hips. Meanwhile, all around them were folks carrying everything from Thompsons to flame-throwers to mini-guns. What sort of idiot would do ANYTHING remotely illegal, immoral, or even impolite, when everybody and their brother is armed to the teeth.

Whats that quote? "An armed society is a polite society" - it's true. Everybody there was very friendly, polite, and considerate.

"I have a Garand.

Great! Just make sure the gas cylinder is tight on the barrel and the elevation screw on the rear sight is tight and everything else is easy. At least this time I get to use a sling instead of trying to figure out how to use one on a Yugo Mauser 8MM. We'll keep bumping these threads on the Bang list and try to let everyone know what's next. If we wait a month or two and then give everyone another month, that will put us into cooler weather. No use suffering and taking away the fun. As long as we don't do this around the opening day of deer season and have to wait in line at the range.

HG - you need to compete in the next match

I may just do so.. hmmmm, which piece to use??
None of the exotics, truth be told the deer rifles are far
more accurate, and have the better scopes.. 270 perhaps...

I'm taking a CMP Clinic in October. I'll probably buy a M1 Garrand sometime next year since I'll be buying a shotgun soon and can't really afford to buy two guns in a year.
