Agnes states that in the fall of 1957, in Greenville, S.C., with her father present, Bishop John Russell of the Charleston Archdiocese and his chancellor, Bernardin, raped her as part of a satanic ritual, which included, as a RCF report stated, "a perverted, sacrilegious use of a [consecrated] host."

Haldol alert. sounds like she forgot to take her medications and is getting paranoid delusions.

As for Bernadine, for what it is worth, Andrew Greeley in his 1990 book, discusses the homosexual clique working in the bishop's office who protected gay priests. However, he defended Bernadine from charges of homosexuality, saying that unlike gay priests, he enjoyed talking to women and related to women like a normal heterosexual.

Dear Polycarp,

Then it is alleged that "Agnes'" father was part of the "gang". Satanic abuse occurs, but far less frequently than it's charged by alleged victims. I watched as experts in my field were fooled in large numbers throughout the 1980s. I watched as people with previously-excellent reputations were ruined by being taken in by alleged victims.

For me, based on having seen that most of these allegations have ultimately come to absolutely nothing, such an allegation is radioactive. It isn't that it's impossible. These things really do occur. But because of the likelihood of false charges, these sorts of allegations must meet the highest burdens of proof.

So it's ok to denigrate a woman who may have been the victim of abuse when a child, but we can't say a word against Bernardin and other prelates who have wrecked the Catholic Church for the last thirty years?

The laity bears quite a bit of responsibility for the state of the Church because of the way it jumps through hoops to defend the ecclesiastical gangsters in charge right now. These guys are crooks and worse; the sooner people realize this and stop fawning over every guy in a roman collar or with a pectoral cross, the better. Don't forget that Judas Iscariot was a bishop.

Her story is so bizarre that it suggests mental illness. Remember the hysteria a few years ago about daycare centers where similar stories were told? Many innocent people went to jail on hysterical charges that were untrue or greatly exaggerated.

True satanic abuse is rare. Child abuse is alas common.Sexual abuse is common, But even Freud realized that many of the women who claimed under hypnosis that they were raped were confusing reality with fantasy. Not all memories are accurate.

“’We reach out to those who suffer. We apologize to them and offer our help for the future.”

Does everything get written to sound like liturgy? Is there music to this?

American Catholic Church

I didn't think there was such a thing.

I know there are Roman Catholic churches located IN America, but there isn't (or there shouldn't be) an American-only hierarchy.

“...and the American bishops have for decades ignored Vatican directives they found to be objectionable.”

Doesn’t this indicate that the Catholic Church isn’t actually Catholic?

You got the picture.

Crazy people get abused. They are ideal targets because they have little power and no one will believe them.

There is much evidence that the priests chose individuals with little power and few resources.

Nope. It indicates that many Bishops are disobedient, some perhaps to the point of being schimatic and/or heretical. Holy Mother the Church was created by Our Lord and guarenteed by Him to be proof against even the Gates of Hell. Flawed mankind is another story. None of us is certain of Heaven, only by the unmerited Gift from God can we obtain that.
