Actually, surfactants are a little different. They reduce the surface tension of the water, allowing it to penetrate into areas it might not reach otherwise. There are generally two types: anionic and cationic, and I'm done with my chem lecture at this point.
Must admit this thread took an odd twist. But it's been fun.
