Actually, they always were what they claimed to abhore. It was left-wing tactics and communist genocides which created fascism in the first place, as a kind of allergic reaction to the culture destroying agenda of the left. Having created their nemesis, leftists then spent the rest of the 20th century (and now the 21st century) blaming everyone but themselves.
