From memory, I don't think it was a question of technology but of price. There were higher grade plates avaliable, but the one used were significantly cheaper (and there was a question of time). The real problem though was that pariticular grade of metal was at its most brittle in the cold waters just above 0 degrees so it didn't offer enough resistance when it got walloped by the 'berg...

I don't think it was a question of technology but of price. That would not surprise me a bit. Lot's of people get killed when they take the short cut. I am going to do a search myself, and see if there was indeed better steel available, because I had not heard that, but I shall check it out.
Later.

That baby can carry enough fish to feed 18 million people. A perfect Simpsons show. Captain McAllister buys the ship, Lisa protests the killing of fish, Homer signs on as a crew member and eats the profits.

It hardly looks big enough. Wish they had a cut-out diagram of the ship's innards.

Ah...the Irish never disappoint. Knew you had to have a list.
Great what is going on,isn't it? My brother-in-law is of Irish heritage. He and my sis visit every year. Getting a little pricey for them now as the economy has improved so much.
