I also was the guy who would go find things when they couldn't be gotten.
One of my "usual tactics" was to go aboard some air craft carrier in port.
Then "get supplies" and disappear back to my Destroyer.
The Weapons Officer used to give me a 2 day liberty upon my return.
But he also warned me if I ever got caught, I was on my own. LOL

Ssme ruled applied in my Unit.

Even got a replacement 3/4 ton dodge that one of our LT's had stolen in Bien Hoa. Had help with that one but the LT would have been in big trouble if the CO knew he hadn't locked up the vehicle. He was a popular LT in the Company so we "covered" for him, a few unit markings changed, some paperwork at the motor pool misplaced and viola we found the truck. I've always wondered what happened later when they finally got around to checking actual serial numbers.

It's amazing how much "stuff" we found laying around the airstrip in Phouc Vinh, those Air Force guys weren't real careful on gurading their "stuff".
