BBC confirming the guy's a psycho: "The Dutch state broadcaster, NOS, said it had received a statement from the man, who said he was 'demonstrating against the manipulative sellers of wide-screen television.'"
As for Amsterdam's tallest building, the thing must be about 6 stories right?

Guns are illegal in the Netherlands. This must be a hoax.

6 stories? No, not quite...
The 135-metre (443-foot) tower is home to around 50 companies, including some of the city's biggest financial firms.
Big names housed there include Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers, Rabo Securities, and ING bank.

No, I live on the other side of the Netherlands.
Here is the story:
The man complained about the bigscreen broadcasts. He did not have a 16:9 TV, but a 4:3 TV, so there was black area on the top and the bottom of the screen. He complained about this, but he was not taken seriously.
He wanted to take personel from Philips hostage as a protest, but he went into the wrong part of the building. He decided to take some hostages there instead.
But it's all over now, the guy shot himself!

1. Whew. 2. He took hostages because he didn't have the right kind of TV? Psychosis city. At least he did himself in before he hurt anyone else.

"... Guns are illegal in the Netherlands. This must be a hoax." Wide-screen TV salesmen are pretty manipulative in The Netherlands... Could be true.

Who are you to make statements about the mental health of people abused by the false statements made by wide screen tv makers? Obviously you do not understand the depth of our frustration at having to settle for a distorted picture or the black lines.
I fear if our grievances are not considered there will much resentment and unpredictable events attributed to the freedom fighters in the wide screen world.
/sillyrant off, but the wide screen gripe is legitimate.

No surprise. I've heard teenagers seriously state that "TV is life" - just a matter of time until someone of that mindset went fittingly postal.
