Davis' people are apparently under the assumption that it will be easier to run against Simon than against Riordan. They have caused Riordan to spend more money than he would have ordinarily, and he is now more vulnerable to the Gray Davis war chest.

This is an excellent article, except for this point. I really think that Davis wanted to run against Riordan, regardless of Riordan's early numbers. The reason: Davis knew that Riordan would lose 30% of the Republican base because he's so liberal, and because Riordan has so many flip-flops and gaffes that the election would become about RIORDAN, not about DAVIS' FAILURES. Davis was just trying to soften Riordan up in order to have him weak on March 6th.

I think that when Davis' campaign saw that Simon had actually set up an organization and a strong positive message, and when the Riordan hits started people had an alternative -- Simon --, they told the press "That's what we wanted all along." I don't think so. I think they are just saving face.

Simon is going to be a much more formidable challenger than Riordan. The election can now be run on Davis' Record and Failures, not Riordan's flip-flops and gaffes.

Now it looks as though Riordan, as a result of the loss of his front-runner status, is going to try and make a sharp right turn.

Alas, poor Yorick! Too late for you. Once conservatives make up their minds, nothing will change their votes. Riordan's only hope is to try to win over Bill Jones's remaining voters, or to get Jones to drop out and endorse him.

Very sad when you consider that she is, by far, the less harmful one of the pair. The saddest thing is that, geographically, most of California is decent. If we could only get the San Andreas fault to cooperate and dump the left coast areas in the ocean but leave most of Orange, San Diego, SLO, some of Santa Barbara and Ventrua counties untouched.

Well, if you'd permit me, only in the sense that smoking cigarettes is far less harmful than mainlining heroin. Feinstein is less strident and radical than the carpetbagging b-tch from the Bronx, but she's no less a leftist, and because of her husband's business interests there, she is totally in the pocket of the (Red) China lobby---remember her disgraceful shilling for the ChiComs last April while our airmen were being held hostage on Hainan Island?

The only problem is I think a real Republican like Simon would have a hard time getting elected. I travel to CA a lot for business, and the mood I sense is that people aren't thrilled with Davis, but they are leery of having a Republican in charge due to the whole Pete Wilson/deregulation debacle, plus with Bush refusing to get involved during the blackouts, they feel like he gave them the finger. I don't sense a lot of enthusiasm to put another Republican in the governor's mansion. I think Riordan actually has a better shot at beating Davis, I know a few Dems who have told me they would vote for him over Davis, but I don't see them supporting Simon.

Still, when all the dust settles, the critical factor is going to be who gets out the vote. Only registered Republicans can vote in this primary election.

The California GOP is on its way to becoming No. 3. It already is in some counties. Local politics out here is getting strange (by California standards) as fat cats abandon GOP-registered conservatives, for being hopeless loony-tunes, in favor of business-friendly liberals and lefties in local (non-partisan) elections. The Greens are upset no end at facing pro-development lefties in those.

Which is aborting future generations of GOP candidates who don't come from the tin-foil hat brigade. GOP candidate development has become a major problem in California.

I don't see any solution until Hispanics forget about former Governor Pete Wilson.

I think a court tossed the intiative that implemented open primaries. And a good job, too--both Republicans and Democrats opposed it, and the whole stupid idea was the brainchild of that loser RINO Tom Campbell, who used the open primary of 2000 to get the Republican nomination for Senate to run against Feinstein. The jackass ran as a male version of Feinstein, and of course lost miserably.
