I've had migranes for about 50 years (none for the last year, thankfully.) A few observations: they used to be related to certain foods, corn, chocolate, tomatoes. These no longer cause trouble (except for tomatoes at times.) I have since noticed that the offending foods need to be eaten in combination with a weather change. One of my former supervisors had cluster headaches; he got them the same days that I got my migranes. Another collegue also got headaches the same days that we got them.

I just use Tylenol 3 when the aura starts. This (according the doctor) works for about 25% of sufferers; the others need something else. (I do get the whole range of symtoms, aura, numbness, nausea, headache, etc.)

Use aspirin instead of tylonal. That (mixed with the booze) is what destroys the liver.

"Men do not usually go to the migraine pain stage, however, some men experience the aura including vision disturbance."

That's me. I have had maybe 15 migraines in my life but they are not fun. I get the "auras" for sure. If you've worked with Photoshop it's just like the "marching ants" animation when you create a selection--semi-circle on one side of both eyes.

I don't have pain until the next day though along with weakness and severe sensitivity to light. They SUCK!

When I had them going through puberty I had problems with forming words along with numbness in my hands and tongue. I got all kinds of tests performed but they said my noggin' was fine.

Both my Dad and my Mom get them but not as severe.

men don't go to the pain stage

Some do. It's not as common. Just reading this thread gave me a painless migraine.

I did have food allergies, as a child , but the migraines were / are unrelated to them. I NEVER had a migraine, when I had hives. : - )

Oh thanks, LOL, now you too ... with the mutant stuff ? Naaaaaaaaaaaaw ... just a " throw back " ( if genetc at all ) to some paternal relative, who was no longer alive, by the time I came along ; is my guess . My maternal relatives were good at keeping records of illnesses , so I do know the medical blips, on that side of my family, quite a ways back ; about 6 generations. My paternal medical side is mostly a mystery, beyond my paternal grandparents and aunts & uncles.

I too will still get an aura and " sensativity ", without the headache now. I thought that thsi was strange; however , now that you say that you get it too, that sommehow helps. Likewise, I am glad that you no longer get the actual migraine much anymore . : - )

That's close to what I get from time to time. Once or twice a year. It usually fades away in 45 minutes.

Oh gee, how did I manage to leave out barometric pressure / weather changes ? Yes, that WILL cause migraine and cluster headaches. My husband and I do get headaches when it is about to rain , or there is an inversion. Thanks for the addition !

From what you say, it does sound very much like a food allergy " trigger " . I'm glad that you have outgrown it ! Tomatoes contain a lot of natural sugar and vitamin C; both well known causes of migraines.

Two Extra Strength Exedrin / Excedrin for Migraines, at the first hint of an aura, works for me. Nothing, but going to bed in a dark room , where I couldn't hear any noise, or smell food , was the only thing that I could do, for many years. Like you, I have had migraines for 50 years, or so. Thank goodness, being older has SOME benefits. : - )

RMLEW WROTE: "Imitrex makes me nausiated."

I tried Imitrex, but it didn't seem to do anything for mine. I now take Inderal every day (generic is Propranalol or something like that). It works GREAT!

Back in 1992, I got viral meningitis and had to be admitted to the hospital for a week. At one point, I had a caffine-withdrawl headache, a sinus headache, a glare headache, an eye strain headache, a stress headache, a hunger headache (from lack of food due to vomiting)---all on TOP of the hellacious headache from the meningitis itself.

They gave me morphine in the hospital (which caused severe nausea and vomiting) but had to have so much, I could not talk or function. A healthcare worker who had had severe headaches told me to ask my Doctor to get me "DHE-45."

My Doctor had never heard of it, but he did some quick research and got it for me in IV form. My headaches went away INSTANTLY upon entering my body!!!!! At the time, you could only get it via IV---and only in a hospital.

A few years later, I heard they came out with a prescription nasal spray called "Migranol," which had DHE-45 in it. Again, my Doctor was not familiar with it, but got me a prescription for it. You spray it once (or twice---I can't remember) in each nostril and wait for 15 minutes. If that didn't get rid of the migraine, you were to repeat the process. I only used it a couple of times, but within 15 - 30 minutes, my migraines were GONE!!!

After having suffered the HORRIBLE pain from migraines, getting instant relief from headaches is a Godsend!

What?! All I was suggesting was that if there's a genetic cause to migraines, and if you're the first in your family to get them, then perhaps your genetic code has mutated to include this gene. Sheesh! Perhaps being high strung is a prime factor for some people.
