As soon as the U.S. government committed to the cover-up of the involvement of others besides McVeigh and Nichols, a speedy McVeigh execution was to the advantage of the government.
The real question for me is, why was a speedy execution to McVeigh's advantage? Consider thousands of new documents hidden by the Clinton Administration had recently been discovered and there was a new Bush Justice Department in place to respond to his appeal. If nothing else, an appeal based on the missing documents would have exposed the corruption in the federal government which was supposedly McVeigh's true target in the first place.
ON the other hand, I don't rule out that some of said Iraqis were double agents. I don't find it inconceivable that Saddam was just as happy with the bombing as were the domestic controllers running the operation. . .
Difficult to keep track of these kindly old pill-poppers with pocket watches.
