The Bork hearings were a real turning point straight downward because liberals discovered the power of lying using twisted facts and unsupported allegations I was a staunch Democrat who tuned in to the Bork nomination because I 'hated' him for the "Saturday Night Massacre" firing of Archibal Cox. He explained his role to my satisfaction and then went on to prove that he was a superior jurist who would defend the Constitution.
The actions of the Democrats confused me at first, but they topped even that vile performance in the Thomas proceedings.
I watched the party I joined because they were the 'color blind compassionate' faction, be more vicious and racist than any crazy old Kluxer I had met in my youth.
I knew then that everything they had ever said was a lie, and I vowed then and there to never again vote for a Democrat.
If I were black and lived in Laurel Miss., I'd be doing some heavy rethinking on my political leanings.
May this current 'borking' open up a few more eyes and gain us new 'converts'.

I almost spit my coffee out when I read it in the hardcopy Times this AM. And, in answer to your question, they posted it as the lead article on the National News page in the A section.
As far as Firestone goes, he's one of the Times' people in the south; he also reports a lot about the NFL.
In the past six or so months, I have noticed a much more even-handed approach to the news on the part of the Times (why? the FoxNews effect, perhaps; or someone is reading smartertimes.com). But click here for another example from last month. While their news seems to be getting a little better, their editorial department is worse (if you can believe it).

When you see the liberal interest groups attack a man with a sterling record on race issues as a racist, you see a moribund philosophy that has abandoned any hope of appeal to reasonable or idealistic people.
In a way, Judge Pickering is even more of a threat to them than Judge Thomas was. When you have a white southern conservative who is a friend of reasonable black aspirations, it makes it awfully hard to advance the theory that conservatives are all racists and hostile to blacks. This is the position that democrats rely on to get large majorities of the black vote, which is the only thing enabling them to be competitive in national elections.

Interesting point. This morning, I heard a comment that the entire Democratic platform is summed up in one word: Boo! THey scare the elderly, minorities, you name it. The party has become little more than reactionary liberalism. The merits of a particular argument do not favor them, so they have to destroy careers and families, and they try to frame issues in terms of who is saying it instead of what is being argued. Now they have turned the political attack machine against judicial nominees at every level. Pickering represents everything they despise: a genial white Southerner with generally conservative views. In the salons of Greenwhich Village and Georgetown, that is toxic.

It would be interesting to see IF and WHERE the story appeared in the print version.
Lead story, National Report, page A22.

As someone mentioned, Gene Lyons and Joe Conason and other liberals now hate the NY Times and the Washington Post and have for some time. They insist that the media, including outlets once known for their liberalism, are in lock-step with conservatives now. The corporate media, they call it.
