I saw both of Simon's TV ads tonight. They were quite good.

Aren't you in the central valley? That was a market that was marked for "second stage" expansion, which means that he's decided to really kick in some money. I wonder if it will finally erode that 13% that Bill Jones has has backing him since last July. That really bugs me, those people have been in his camp forever, and I'm worried they're going to stay there when we really need them to push Simon over the top and defeat Riordan. See the California locale for a Simon vs. Riordan exchange I had with one of the "fanatical 13" as I like to call them.

GO SIMON!

Dickie Pooh is a liberal Bill Clinton in Republican drag, an embarrassment to the California GOP and to all like-minded conservatives. He's politically inept as he is pandering to every group to the left of Emily's List. I'm shunning him as one shuns the plague and I exhort every conservative in our state to do the same. NO DIABLA IN 2002!!!

I'm planning on voting for Bill Simon, but I'm concerned the died in the wool conservatives who are against abortion will choose Riordan because of an ad I saw today where he states he thinks abortion is murder. I do agree with that stance, but I just don't like the rest of his policies. Hopefully, other people won't either.

Yes that's where I'm at. I went looking on the website but I can't find what you're describing. Is it under campaign watch or campaign news? As for Jones, it's hard to say what people are going to do. If it doesn't look like he's got a chance at winning, you'd hope that people would switch over and not throw away a vote just for loyalty's sake. I imagine some will do that, but the TV ads are good and I think he'll win some people over, especially since Jones hasn't been airing any TV ads himself. I'm glad Simon is airing them here, the Valley is predominantly Republican now and Fresno just reported more registered Repubs than Dems. That's a good sign. I don't know what the mayor Autry was smoking when he endorsed Riordan, but I don't think that means anything really.

I forgot to ask, what's the 'fanatical 13'?

the fanatical 13 are the 13% Jones pulls in every poll. They really irritate me because they're the split anti-Riorda vote. Simon with those 13 would be REALLY dangerous to Riordan. As for the Simon website, it's not managed very well. I know those of us on the campaign committee here in the Bay Area were considering setting up our own Simon website because we were having such "issues" with the main one.

Did you read the National Review Online article on this? Simon isn't spending much money on his campaign and they want to know if he really wants to win.

Simon does want to win. He is spending money -- lots of it. Each week he's adding more television ... it's ridiculous to spend it all at the beginning when voters aren't focused on the election. An incremental approach is far better in the long run.

Expect to see more Simon on tv. In fact, I say a completely new commercial last night on UPN where he's in an office with the Capitol in the background saying that he won't raise taxes and talking about the fiscal condition of the state. It was good.

There's another debate this weekend in San Jose, I don't knwo what day or time. Anyone?

There's supposed to be a debate at the state convention Saturday, February 9, noon to 2 p.m. (not to be televised)

The third and final one is at California State University-Long Beach is February 13 (this one should be televised)

I am really glad he is airing TV ads here now. There are votes to be had here. I'm thinking that even though Jones is classified as a moderate, his base is still pretty conservative. If people decided to switch, or are undecided, I think they are much more likely to go towards Simon than Riordan. But that's IF they have the proper information. Riordan has been airing a lot of ads here, and I'm hoping people will see through the smokescreen and doublespeak he's putting up. My theory is that the average voter is more passive than active, which is why TV is so effective with them. Plus, with all the constant repetition, it gets ingrained into a person's consciousness, which every good advertiser knows. Simon is smart to keep focusing on the problems of this state. It seems all Davis wants to talk about is abortion, because he's screwed up everything else and doesn't want to talk about his record!

You're right. Tell everyone you know, talk to your friends and neighbors. We need the grassroots. Money isn't everything (look at Huffington!)
