If you live near a large city, the chances are you need 2 incomes. Unless, of course, your husband makes 80-100 grand a year, or you are willing to live in squalor.

I agree, but I think it needs to be at least 4 years. It takes some time for a new system to demonstrate its effects. At 6 years that means you might have written off an entire class of kids currently in the 6th grade. At four years, you'd have a chance to try something new with them.

They can't stop homeschooling.

Boy, I sure wish I had your confidence. They can circle the wagons and make life pretty darn miserable for these folks. I don't trust the teachers unions and their power any further than I can throw them.

Then we drop the hammer on `em.

If the unions drag their feet, then it's time to take a page from the governor of Pennsylvania and bring in Edison.

Of course they are against homeschooling, as it highlights their incompetence!! But they cannot stop homeschooling, they just want to rail against it.

Not all teachers are against homeschooling. .

Sorry, but ONE YEAR would tell you just as well as 4 or 6. Something either works or it does not work. It does not improve with age like cognac!!

Disagree. Even in the military, commands are preferably 2 years long so that changes can take hold and new directions forged out of those changes. All you can do in 1 year is spend the 1st six months learning how things work and then trying to implement changes. With no followup, those things will die.

You have to give President Bush credit. At least he is genuinely trying to keep his campaign promises! Did Bill Clinton do that much? No. Mr. Clinton did not. President Bush kept his promise on the Tax Cut. "W" has just succeeded in getting the Military a pay raise. Now "W" has gotten an Education Bill passed that accomplishes part of what he originally wanted to get done.

You must consider the deck is stacked against "W" right now.President Bush has partisan Dimocrats fighting him every step of the way. Those extremist Dimocrats could care less about what's good for the country. All those Dimocrats care about is getting re-elected.

The justices that a GOP and Blue Dog Senate could confirm would buy a generation of preservation of our sacred Constitution. That alone is worth a Normandy Beach.

The NEA gains temporarily. School teachers tend to side with the GOP on most issues except for school vouchers. Parents involved with their local schools will get behind the President. Now the GOP needs to get behind him as well on this and broadcast this achievement during this year's campaign.

I am for vouchers but vouchers and homeschooling will survive and continue to evolve to provide a better alternative.

Exactly. Or in some cases, if your wife makes a lot of money. . .That doesn't leave a lot of time for home schooling. But after the president's speech, I had an idea. My youngest is struggling in school now, and I've tried everything. She's very bright. I can't homeschool because I work. BUT--I CAN find the curriculum she's going through in each one of her subjects, and I can order the necessary books to see exactly where she is, and I can work with her at night, eh? (I thought this was a pretty good idea!)

Whatever is on the test becomes what the students "are supposed to know", so whoever or whatever is funding the testing companies and writing the tests has enormous control over what the students are taught, for all schools want to do well on the test, right?

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. I knew there had to be something there, but I forgot that great maxim - follow the money!

Sorry, you don't sign a BAD bill, that only aids your enemies, just to keep a promise. Besides, he did NOT keep his promise, as he allowed the only meaningful changes to be deleted. He has enough voter confidence NOT to cave in to these BA$TARDS, and he caved. And if he lets Daschle run roughshod over him, it is his fault, not Daschle's.

Good idea, and good luck. Also, if you can manage to get the teachers edition with all the correct answers, it eliminates any deficiencies you may have as a co- teacher.

No, seriously, one of my daughter's teachers recommended that I homeschool my daughter in one subject over the summer since she needed to catch up. It worked out very well. And since it was one subject, I could make time for it even with my work schedule.

Then you move to a non-city area, or a cheaper state. It annoys me to hear friends in San Jose cry because it's so expensive to live there. THERE'S A WHOLE COUNTRY YOU COULD PICK FROM - San Jose is not your only choice!

There are also many ways to change your lifestyle into a frugal one, IF you really wanted to get by with less.

With all due respect, what planet are you on?

The one where people think a new car and a big screen TV are "needs" and not "wants".

If you like your two incomes, fine. If you whine that you have to have two incomes and would rather have one so that a parent could take care of the children, downgrade. If it takes two incomes to live near a big city, move. If it takes two incomes to pay the mortgage, rent. If it takes two incomes to make two car payments, sell one.

When people say they can't get by on one income, what they are really saying is that one income cannot maintain the standard of living to which they have become accustomed and that they are unwilling to make the tough decisions. It all about priorities. I will say it again: The standard of living of today's poor is about the same as that of the middle class in the 1970's. That means that if your one income is at least above the poverty level, you are living better than the average American lived 30 years ago.

If it helps the GOP to regain the Senate and hold the House, the benefit that ensues is worth the cost.

I hope you don't honestly think the Democrats will roll over for that. They are already painting this as "We made Bush sign OUR Education Bill".

Republicans will not win elections by trying to outDemocrat the Democrats. You can't outspend a Democrat.
