There are some sites I visit that litterally dump spyware & pop-ups so fast that I had to disengage the sound on my "Pop-Up Kiler"
I am about to start contacting the advertisers on these things and letting them know what kind of impression they are making. I don't think they have a right to use bandwith I pay for to stick their stupid ads in my face.
I am of the opinion that this is just going to keep getting worse until something is done about it. Right now, there's nothing stopping them.
On the LA Times site there is an audio type pop-up that BLASTS my speakers. Most annoying, and I've let 'em know it.
A web company called United Virtualities developed them. I have no idea wheree the name comes from. They are a Flash animation that moves across the web page, then they disappear. Very cleverly done, and much less intrusive.
Obviously I cannot post a link, lol. But you can go to their web site (unitedvirtualities.com) and go to the shoshkeles page to view some they have done.
Good grief, tpaine ... given the way you've run amok on me (and others) over the years, how in the world could you possibly be the judge of what's over the top? That's would be akin to letting me be arbiter of substance on Sex threads or having Sinkspur decide what threads are not in the best interest of the GOP's and Bush Family's image.
Surely you -- as Libertarian -- understand the concept of private property. This is Jim's place to do with as he pleases ... delegating authority to those he trusts so that he can perhaps have a chance to enjoy or continue to improve the place himself.
I for one am sick and tired of all the bitching from the short pants set who caves on the question of abortion but will defend to their last breath the right to a public display of porn as if the last word in manliness and liberty were the freedom to satisfy oneself while staring at a piece of paper.
You think maybe it's time to set aside the trappings of adolescence ... including the plaintive whining?
A little more discretion, judgment and Objectivity from you and the rest of the Adult Entertainment Set -- who seem strangely prone to take every last thing personally despite their slavish worship of Sola Reason -- would result in a far better forum, IMHO, and give you and your comrades a far richer measure of credibility.
I'm certain that, if Jim thought it in the best interest of this forum, he'd have detailed exactly why he's found it necessary to give everyone this little reminder. Given that he's got more tact and class in his little finger than over half the keyboard warriors around here, I suspect he sees no reason to air dirty laundry, point fingers or rouse suspicions when a simple NOTAM naming no names will do.
As for Sirgawain's getting iced for the time being, I don't think anyone us can pretend for a moment to be privy to each and every poster's history or interaction with Jim. Assuming we had parents who were human, I think each of us may be familiar with the "straw that broke the camel's back."
I don't know anyone -- myself included -- who's ever been entirely happy with each and every banning or editing of a thread. The fact remains that we're all of us presumably adults and able to exercise some judgment when posting here.
If Jim and his moderators insist on treating us thus -- regardless how juvenile or immature we repeatedly may prove ourselves -- I think that's to our credit, actually.
No one's perfect. Whether or not I believe--as I do--that Jim is an honorable sort who does his level best to accomodate all VISITORS while maintaining the integrity of HIS site, the fact remains that it is HIS PROPERTY to do with as he pleases.{*}
I will never understand (well, actually I understand perfectly ... =) why it is always the libertarians who seem to have the hardest time getting this through their heads.

{*} -- Sure, he relies on donations to keep the lights on but ... with 75,782 registered posters (and counting), he could use the help -- particularly from those of us who've been here the longest and, by our continued presence, attest to our having benefited the most from the place whether or not it's run to our satisfaction.
Someone's got to pay for the bandwidth necessary to accomodate the chat, the cheesecake and the Humor Breaks as we pay occasional attention to the stated purpose of the place.
IMHO, Jim's laxity where all things "Humor" or "Off Topic" is concerned speaks for itself -- ad infinitum -- each and every hour of the day.
How can I help but love you for your utter consistency?!?
Would that I could depend upon all men the way I depend upon you!
All the best, you run-amok nut.

---- wait, -- point two may be the basis for adjustments to point one.
"One of the easiest ways to post an article is to do a right click on the original page, hit "View Source," then copy the code and paste it into the FR window. "I always get a chill when posters copy an entire website. This site is concerned with argument -- content, not form. We should stick to the text. Besides, it'll save on bandwidth.
My personal solution to hyperactive posters is to turn off images in my browser. That way I can choose what I want to see & the pages more quickly run thru my copper wires (at 27.5...).
I can still get a kick out of you even if I've every respect and admiration for your marriage. (It's a rare gift to love and be loved so faithfully for 40 years.) Anyway, you're no different in that respect from the rest of my (primarily) male friends and acquaintances.
As for my being a suck-up ... how soon we forget my perpetually casting you as a crusty adolescent crank in shortpants!
Regards, tpaine ... (and all my best to the long-suffering Mrs. tpaine who surely must have the thick skin of stegosauraus and the patience of a saint! =)
I got rid of every one of them that wasn't something I could identify as useful and haven't been bothered (so far) since.
I gripe at tpaine only because I'd be totally ticked off if ever he managed to get himself booted over something so silly as telling Jim how best to govern his property or defending the "right" of posters to be sophomoric as they work to roll back decades of governmental largesse, root out political fraud and corruption, and champion causes which further conservatism in America.
Regards!
