They're going to do it. I think they're really going to do it. First use of nukes in a war since 1945.

Most obviously, there are US troops in Pakistan in support of the war against the Taliban. Nuclear missles aimed at Pakistani military infrastructure would likely kill some American troops. Not to mention hugely global destabalizing effect such a war would have at this point.

Forgive my ignorance, but are these missles nuclear or conventional? I am not sure what medium range ballistic missles are.

I sure hope Pakistan has no deliverable nukes. Has there ever been evidence of Pak nukes other than a test detonation? Getting uranium or plutonium to go boom is one thing, making it portable is quite another.

Doesn't sound good that Pakistan ,India ,and their other neighbor-China all have nuclear capabilities. I f not for the hand of God ,this would have already hit the fan.

Well we are currently partners with General Musharaff in Pakistan. He let us use his bases to attack the Taliban. The problem is the people in the North of Pakistan. This is an area that is not under any real control. The folks there are pro-Taliban and pro-Bin Laden. They have funneled men and supplies to the Muslim separatists in Kashmir which is part of India but claimed by Pakistan.

India is also our ally at present. They are a democracy and we have given them the go ahead to pursue the terrorists who attacked their Parliament last week. Those terrorists came from those outlaw areas of Northern Pakistan.

The US is thus caught between two countries that are our tentative allies. If they go to war, which side do we back? The ideal would be for Pakistan to clean out the terrorists in the North with our help and then get an agreement between India and Pakistan. UN troops in Kashmir might be required. If the Pakistani government is overthrown, the nuclear weapons might fall into the hands of the pro-Bin Laden people if not Osama himself. That would be a nightmare.

The main problem for the entire world is that India and Pakistan both have nuclear weapons. They are old enemies from the time the British partitioned the country between the Muslims (Pakistan) and the Hindus (India). The two sides have been archenemies ever since. They last fought an actual war in 1971. Needless to say, a nuclear war between the two could impact the entire world from the fallout, radiation, etc.

They actually had nukes long before their "test."

They have plenty of nukes deliverable on fighter aircraft. It's a little unclear what they have in a missle warhead form. But rest assured they have deliverable nukes.
