Ashcroft's reign of terror? I didn't see him fly an airplane full of Americans into the World Trade Center.
To: Ada Coddington
I see the delegates from the New Know-Nothing Party are busily working to divert attention from the
message by demonizing the
messenger.
Their reactions are all the more evidence that the message of this article is spot-on, and the overt depredation of the Constitution will continue to succeed for the foreseeable future.
(You'd think the new Repub theme song was "Shelter Me".)

Mr. Raimundo needs to be put in front of a military tribunal and then shot for treason.

Nice twist of the language. Anti-War.com is the current day heir of the original Know-Nothings, but you turn the insult around and hurl it at your enemies. Hitler and Lenin would be proud of your ability to twist meanings in the pursuit of your cause. If you believe this garbage, then you should join the Taliban in resisting the evil US. Oh, but that would mean placing your life on the line. Oh well, I guess you can continue as a fifth column for the Destroy America crowd.

Why ? He's turning into Arlen Specter.Nah, he's the same old Bob Barr. Unlike most Reppies he hasn't panicked.
To: Ada Coddington
I don't care how you spin it, we need two separate procedures: one for citizens, one for non-citizens. To give non-citizens the rights of citizens reduces the meaning of citizenship to zero.
And to follow the advice of this article would reduce the overall safety of citizens in America, down towards zero.
In case the writer (and the die-hard poster) hasn't heard, they're coming to get us and they have nukes. What good will our precious rights be when we're all a bunch of ash?
But I'm not saying we give up our rights... just that we keep them for ourselves. The US Constitution wasn't written to protect the "rights" of itinerate scumbags who land on our shores with our murders as their goal.

Mr. Raimundo needs to be put in front of a military tribunal and then shot for treason.Or at the very least, lese majeste.
Definitely shouldn't be saying these terrible things.

Justin occasionally still does some good work. This essay has some good points, but I do wish he'd learn not to be so shrill and strident. You don't persuade people to your views by attacking their morals or characterizing them as evil.
Yes, there are some troubling -- even very troubling -- things about such manifestations of the crisis as the Patriot Act. It went well overboard in certain directions, such as the expansive surveillance powers given to the FBI. This doesn't make John Ashcroft a terrorist, any more than it exculpates the Black Tuesday hijackers that the Israelis have committed a few injustices against the Palestinians. (Before you start throwing rotten fruit, the Israelis have done far less evil to the Palestinians than the other way around, but in their circumstances, a complete absence of excesses or injustices in the protection of their nation would elevate them to angelic status.)
Constitutionally, we're definitely on the downslope. If recovery is possible, we'll know soon, but only because of something like a grass-roots we're-not-gonna-take-it-anymore revolution against government outside Constitutional bounds. And that won't be much fun, unless you can somehow contrive to watch it from a distance.
Freedom, Wealth, and Peace,
Francis W. Porretto

In case the writer (and the die-hard poster) hasn't heard, they're coming to get us and they have nukes. What good will our precious rights be when we're all a bunch of ash? Get a grip! Germany survived the Baader-Meinhof, Japan the Red Army, England the IRA and we survived the SLA. We'll survive al Aaeda but I'm not sure whether we'll survive the Patriot Act.
To: Le-Roy
Obviously there must be a problem if you think the Constitution prevents the government from protecting the people from terrorists. In fact the constitution even allows for the suspension of habeas corpus "when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it. " Some people talk about some difference between freedom and security but what they are really saying is "hey, I don't live in a big city so what are the chances of some terrorists blowing up the local store?" As far as the people who died on Sept 11 there was no difference. Because we let terrorists into the country, many innocents lost their lives-and their freedom.

But that will soon wear off, along with the shock of 9/11, and the anger this administration hopes to direct outwards, at Al Qaeda and the Taliban,
It looks like Mr. Raimondo has already erased the below image from his mind and thinks he is some kind of pied piper. In a way he is the pied piper of ignorance that would lead to another 9/11.

We'll survive Al Qaeda only if Ashcroft and Rumsfeld succeed in eliminating them. But I guess some people seem to have a problem with that

This message has been brought to you by the CHICKEN LITTLE SKY IS FALLING PARTY, a non-winning organization, who sound very much like the Communist Party USA, the ultra left, and your neighborhood democrat. Just remember, if we were in power, America would NOT be in wars....of course we would have been defeated and all be slaves by now....but hey, at least Ashcroft wouldn't be Attorney General, trying to bring all those terrorist to justice.

Wrong answer, we have given the priviledge of protecting us from terrorists to the government, the problem is they have REFUSED and continue to REFUSE to lock down our borders.
Giving them new knee jerk reaction powers to do things in our border is not the answer and never has been. The suspension of the writ of habeas corpus is a red herring. Constitutionaly, it only applies in D.C., forts, and other federal installations, NOT the states. For some God forsaken reason, we (shamefully even me) have allowed all these "federal" crimes to come into existence and have effect on Citizens of the Sovereign states. I live in North Carolina, and the writ of habeus corpus can not be suspended.
Citizens in the Union States were never and still are not "suppposed" to subject to ANY "federal" jurisdiction or laws, but hay, who cares about the intent of the foundation of our country, oh wait, if thats not why we are fighting, then why?
