I couldn't find anything about a Bush appointment either. "Media sources say he is thinking about.." is as vague as you can get. I'm guessing it's bunk.
No, the president is just servicing the religious conservatives in his party, that's all. This is what the Republican Party has been known to do - appoint religious conservatives to ultimately meaningless positions to make a show for the base, but then do absolutely nothing of substance to advance the conservative causes that motivate the base to vote Republican in the first place. It's a very clever scam that has worked brilliantly for the Republicans for quite some time.
But what about Ashcroft, you say? You mean the same Ashcroft who recently used language indistinguishable from the president of Planned Parenthood in reference to an abortion clinic bomber suspect? The same Ashcroft who apparently experienced a miraculous "Road to Damascus" conversion to orthodox liberalism at his Senate confirmation hearings? The religious right are being taken for fools. Perhaps they'll wake up someday and crash the Washington cocktail parties where these Republican elites celebrate their devious genius.
Well, democracy is a first step to fascism; different people have different ideas on gender relations in our pluralistic society; and I wouldn't be surprised if bits of the Bible did "require" that along with not eating pork -- but what does any of that have to do with strike authorization votes?
I just did a quick search, and this appears to be a done deal. I think I'm at the overload stage; I kept trying to read it but nothing much was registering. Here's the link: ....."The agency has two major, separate components. The Board itself has five Members and primarily acts as a quasi-judicial body in deciding cases on the basis of formal records in administrative proceedings. Board Members are appointed by the President to 5-year terms, with Senate consent, the term of one Member expiring each year. The current members of the Board are: William B. Gould, IV (Chairman), Sarah M. Fox, Wilma B. Liebman, Peter J. Hurtgen, and J. Robert Brame III. "......"Note: This page is copied from the NLRB web site, and is dated November 25, 1997."
What now?
