The editor of the University of Pittsburgh's newspaper, The Pitt News, defends her right to print "all the news that's fit to print." But, she claims the University administration has no role in your complaints over the judgement behind the student newspaper running such an artilce. I'd say she's completely wrong--especially since yesterday's edition carried and editorial chastizing university administrators for making Pitt look bad in the city press for their reactions to recent events on campus. The truth of the matter is that, although The Pitt News does indeed support itself through its advertisers, the newspaper has a responsibility--just as its administrators do--to exercise good judgement in the content it presents to its community. In this instance The Pitt News failed miserably--and by extension, the University of Pittsburgh looks foolish and downright evil.

This story illustrates (
graphically, apparently) that
entertainment of the reader is an important criterion for the newsworthiness of a story. So much is articulated pretty explicitly in the defense brief. Remind me again why the money journalism gets for its product--the money that it must have in order to "buy ink by the barrel"--is purer than the money I contribute to a political candidate or party.
Regulation of campaign finance is nonsense.

Damn, I can't believe I missed it.

Dr. Daniel's letter in a nutshell: "Some rightwinger posted your sex toy story on that awful Free Republic website and now we all look like fools!"

Students without prior knowledge of sex toys learned about the importance of safety measures. Caution harms no one.Thank goodness the Pitt News is there to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the student body (so to speak). Talk about a disingenuous justification for publishing such an idiotic, offensive "news" story.
In some cases, the self-important student "journalist" eventually outgrows the misguided belief that everything he or she has to say is significant. Unfortunately, having worked with a few recent J-school grads at the newspaper at which I work, I can say that doesn't always happen.

I find it awfully curious how they seem to confuse that self-importance with so-called objectivity.

Much obliged.

I'd say she's completely wrongI disagree, dude. I think more of what goes on within the sacred halls should be published and exposed for what it is-- an attempt to legitimatize the petty and worthless (as far as academic pursuits go... Now what you or I do on our own damn time, that's another matter. ;)

Well that must be because of the way the last generation screwed up the kids...

The problem I have with her position, however, is that she and her staff are passing the "lecture" off as "news." It is nothing of the kind. In fact, the presentation of the piece was so matter-of-fact as to be humorous. I suspect that was intentional, and I therefore don't see why it was on the front page--unless of course that front page belonged to The Onion.

So says the enlightened Newpaper's Chief Editor...:
"...I am proud of the integrity displayed by its employees..." ====================================================
If that article is an example of 'their finest hour', I'm elated that I don't live anywhere near it.
(Whatever they have, might be catching.....)
To: Hildy
Because the previous generation taught them so well.

My thoughts EXACTLY!
