I think what he really means here is "serial polygamy". If there's only one, how can there be a sequence of them?

Serial monogamy, as Fred uses the term, means dating only one girl at a time. You don't sleep with another woman until your current bed-playmate breaks up with you, is what he's talking about.

So if you're a guy and you get married, your chance of a happy -- and correspondingly long -- life is less than 25%.

Yes, but then you need to look at the happiness level of never married men. There are all sorts of studies that prove that marriage is very conducive to overall well-being. I think the real problem is that too many Americans (men and women) are selfish.

Sounds like serial polygamy to me. Regular polygamy would allow you to sleep with (or, strictly speaking, be married to) more than one woman at the same time. Sleeping with only one woman at a time, but doing it with several different women, would be the "serial" way of doing polygamy.

Serial monogamy just sounds like a contradiction in terms to me. If anything, it means getting married, over and over again, to the same woman. And I guess it's been known to happen...

I have to say that if I wasn't unemployed, I'd be pretty happy right now. There are some women whose company I do enjoy, but I've seen all too many overemotional whack jobs who behave exactly like Fred describes. For the male, the downside risk of marriage in America is tremendous.

The pre-med becomes chief surgeon. So he's even more of a catch.

Exactly, he'll be a catch for a younger woman, and he'll trade in his old, tired one who helped him get where he is, for a new one half his age who'll get treated like a princess. Mr. Pre-med becomes chief surgeon-who-fools-around while the wife-who-doesn't-look-like-a-co-ed-anymore serves him with divorce papers and gets the house, the kids, child support, and hefty alimony because she worked two jobs to support them both while he was in med school, worked for free in his office while he was starting up his practice, networked and hosted receptions to make him look good and covered for him at his kids' baseball games and dance recitals because he was called away on emergencies, and also because he was so macho he didn't want her to "work" (because he was going to "take care of her" forever), so any marketable job skills she had 20 years ago have long since become obsolete and will not be able to support herself and her kids without going on welfare unless she socks it to him in the divorce settlement.

This guy Fred is full of absolute horsesh** if he doesn't think there's not two sides to this man-woman thing. A woman could write the feminine version of the same scenario. He sounds bitter, and my example was supposed to sound just as bitter as his. He also sounds like a failure with women. I'm not bitter; I'm happily married--but then I didn't marry "charm" or a pretty face, I married a real man.

Up here in the People's Republic of Washington, if you live with a woman who has kids ... then break up and move out .... you TOO (as in also, double payment, ect) get the court sanctioned obligation of paying child support for someone else's kids. After all, it's in the interest of the child, right? Having a woman get 3 child support payments for a single child is not unheard of. And people wonder why I hate living in this hole ....

I'm just curious. Has this detered anyone from shacking up with a woman while other mens' small children live in the same domicile? It seems to me that if one knows the law and moves in with a mom, one had better do it eyes open and determined to make it work.

Three childsupport payments for one child might be a good start--compensating the child to a minor degree for the injustice done to it when it came into a world where all of its adults have zero morals.

I'm sorry -- I'm really not trying to be obtuse (as if anybody ever tries to be obtuse, they just are, and that may be me in this case), but it just seems to me that as soon as you start talking about more than one woman, serially or otherwise, you're no longer in "monogamy territory".

Oh, well, I suppose this horse has been beaten to death, several times (serial horse beating is probably illegal in this, and 27 other states!), by now.

In other words, it's time to bring on the next horse... ;-)

You have just very ably demonstrated your own powers of perception.

Yes, I agree, I have a keen grasp of the obvious! Join the club and laugh with all us perceptive types.

I don't have much time for men who whine.

Whine? BWAHAHAHAHA! Show me a whine from my posts and I'll show you someone with no sense, no sense of humor, or both and it will be you.

Fred repeated a zillion times in his article that the feminists had a point. So he does think there are two sides to this 'man-woman thing,' and consequently he's not full of hosesh**.

This guy is actually very funny, very witty and right on the mark when it comes to just about everything. Check out his web site loaded with short essays. A conservative feast if ever there was one.
