This is the only conservative sanctuary where I can get extremely po'd or laugh my head off in the same evening. Please keep it online. I've donated before, if it means becoming a paid subscriber, I'll sign up.
Thank you Jim for all that you do. Saying I'm grateful to you is a huge understatement.

As Joan Jett found out with the music Rush uses for his show opens and bumpers...tough. He licensed it. He paid the fees. He can use it. Of course when someone said JJ objected to its use, Rush dropped her music because he's a gentleman, but he didn't have to. She then backed down and claimed she never objected, at which point Rush used it again, but she could have pulled it from her catalog if she had wanted to be a bitch.
But Limbaugh's show is obviously a commercial/for profit production so your question doesn't quite apply.
It used to be that 8 bars of a song could be used without royalties being sought, but I'm not sure if that's still law.

Just keep posting maybe we can fund the radio shows while we are at it. My next show could be all about those vampires that have no life like you. LOL oh I am in that mood tonight. Is it a full moon?

To: Z2
No, I think our current arrangement is working fine. Keep up the good work.

Why, thank you sir!

Was that
$15 from Texas? Geez, why don't they just send aluminium cans?
At least you're safe from the hairy hand of ASCAP and BMI, but maybe Laz should consider writing some original music for the next event.

He licensed it. He paid the fees. He can use it. Well, I guess we have a fact question as to whether FR's use is commercial. It would appear from Jim's responses that no license was obtained, no fees were paid, and no permission was granted.
I'm curious to know whether permission was sought, and if so, what was the reponse? I believe perhaps BobJ can speak to that issue, if he will. I would also be curious to know whether the management of FR makes it a policy to discuss matters such as this before they utilize someone's property for their own purposes.
I find FR's philosophy about private property to be rather curious, being the conservative site it claims to be.
I appreciate your input, Deb.

Yup. And he's got almost three years to produce it. The next Free Republic Inaugural Ball for President Bush will be in January, 2005.
To: Z2
Er, I think the Supreme Court is ok with transformative parodies. Look it up.
To: Jim Robinson

couldn't resist
To: Jim Robinson
Parodies and satire require no permission, no fees, no licensing. Sky's the limit.

This thread represents Z2's shining moment of glory. I don't have the heart to take it down. It will forever be revered in the Anti-FReeper Hall of Shame.
To: Deb
Good. I hereby declare this entire website a parody and satire on American Politics and the Left-Wing Corporate Media (The LA Times and Washington Post in particular). Thank you, Ma'am
To: Jim Robinson
A pair of what and whose tire?
To: Jim Robinson
The FReeper video was a transformative parody! Who knew?
I must say I thrill at your creativity, Jim. Thanks for all the great laughs.
Best of luck on your upcoming fundraiser! Oh, and I hope you'll update us on the settlement negotiations on that other "transformative" issue at your earliest convenience. Goodnight!
