It verifies much more.
Not only the Steven's letter but others as well were mailed from St. Petersburg.
It is late at night, and I must go to bed, but I shall try to do a search tomorrow.
I remember very, very clearly it was reported that the letter to Stevens had a St. Petersburg postmark,
and this was before any of the other anthrax letters were sent.
Remember, the letter to Stevens was sent shortly after Sept. 11, weeks before the others.
I remember reading on this forum it had a St. Petersburg postmark
because reference was made to many Islamic radicals located at a university near St. Petersburg,
I even remember doing a map search at the time.
Has there been any consideration given to the targets? Many are quick to blame right wing fringe group or person, but wouldn't their target be someone like Senator Clinton or Kennedy or one of those types. Why Leahy? Perhaps the mailings are issue specific.
The consensus to date is that the anthrax was not made by the perp but was provided to him.
I haven't seen a thorough debate of the recipients yet. But I agree with you there must be a reason or a thread...
According to the Wall Street Journal at most 8 labs have the virulent strain of anthrax that the terrorists used,
and, reading between the lines, they all have been checked and cleared.
I'd say they know where the anthrax came from, they just aren't telling.
him again? Why not them? You are obstinate.
FBI says anthrax arrived in the mail; letter feared lost
AP 10/16/01 The anthrax that contaminated a supermarket tabloid building in Florida probably arrived in a letter that was tossed in the trash and burned before investigators looked at it, the FBI said Tuesday. FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said investigators reached the conclusion after finding anthrax Monday in a Boca Raton postal building that handled mail for tabloid publishing company American Media Inc.
Authorities say two letters containing anthrax were sent from Trenton, N.J. - one to NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw in New York, the other to the Washington office of Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D. Brokaw's assistant has become infected with the skin form of anthrax, a less serious condition than the Florida cases.
Authorities also said Tuesday that three letters mentioning anthrax were mailed to Brokaw, including the one tainted with the germ.
The second Brokaw letter, postmarked Sept. 20 from St. Petersburg, Fla., contained a powdery substance but tested negative for anthrax. The third letter was mailed Sept. 18 by a New Jersey Statehouse secretary who found it inside a FedEx package sent to the governor's office.
That is what I initially thought. The letter to American Media. Thats what I thought Nogbad was speaking of. I'm still of the belief that no letter was found there.
Got it, thanks.
Just checking google.com for anthrax at www.freerepublic.com-- losts of stuff starting around oct 4.
Just a tidbit to tuck away in case it fits in later:
UM employee fired over Sept. 11 remarks
Mohammad Rahat worked as a research technician in two departments of the university (which may have antrax samples?): microbiology and immunology, and surgery/transplants. He was suspended on Sept. 20 and fired on Sept. 25, allegedly for his remarks. But did the universiy suspect him of stealing bacteria or using its facilities for personal projects? It wouldn't be the first "oops!" where an employee is fired for one reason, but the public is given another.
The first case of anthrax turned up in Miami. Did he send some of his "stock" to one of our physician "friends" in Chester? I would think it wouldn't be at all odd for a physician to get a package from the university.
There used to be a variety of gopher clients available, but most people accessed the gophers by telneting to a Unix shell account and running a client local to the server.
Out of nostalgia and curiosity, I spent some time nosing around to see if there were still any gopher sites up and running. It seems like there aren't many left. I did finally find a list of "All the Gopher Servers in the World" from http://www.alabanza.com/kabacoff/Inter-Links/gophers.html (all the other gopher servers from that page are dead.)
The root at that site is "Gopher root at gopher.tc.umn.edu" in case anyone is curious. It has a search page (there were lots of gopher search utilities back in the protocol's heyday), and has menu items for other search and index sites.
Why do I mention this here?
Because as I was nosing around, it suddenly occurred to me that a global network of servers (albeit sparse) might be something that some unsavory characters might find convenient. IOW, there might be some stuff of interest there, "hidden in plain sight" as it were.
This may be a lode of unexplored territory.
If anyone feels like exploring, the link above would be a good starting point. Don't be surprised (or discouraged) if most of the gophers are dead.
Internet Explorer supports the gopher protocol. I don't know if "Brand N" does, or if any of the other alternative browsers do. I think Lynx supports it, but don't quote me on that. And there may still be a gopher client or two available for download from tucows or some FTP site somewhere.
