I'm not so sure that Condi would make a good president, BUT it would be fun to watch the Dems throw hissey fits and self destruct if she ran.
The campaign would have a satchel full of priceless comments and video, thats for sure.

What is delicious is to think about Condi debating the likes of AlGore, John Edwards, or Little Tommy Daschle.
It would be a massacre. Black and female voters across the country would watch with glee as Condi killed them with a rapier quick mind and incredible wit and Southern charm.
I just cannot wait to vote for her.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

The interesting thing to consider about either Condi Rice or Colin Powell running as VP in '04 and/or president in '08 is that, as things stand now, they would bring absolutely no natural constituency into the Republican Party.
They would bring no state, since neither has run for office before at any level.
They wouldn't even bring blacks in any significant numbers. Blacks have shown their contempt for other blacks who don't share their party affiliation time after time.
If having a person of color on the Republican ticket attracted more than 20 percent of the black vote, I'd be stunned.
Bush is right to try to cling to that popularity rating. Remember what happened when his dad was convinced by the Democrats to cash in some of his own high approval rating to raise taxes and balance the budget. Even a perfectly fought war with a temporary 92-percent approval rating couldn't prevent the '92 debacle in the face of a minor recession.
That's a long-winded way of saying neither he nor we should take '04 for granted.
The greatest danger to Bush is an outsider who, like Clinton, gets into the Democratic race with little hope of winning, when all the other suspects are too scared to run against a highly popular president, only to be there at the end to pick up the win when public sentiment turns.
All that said, if Dick Cheney decides not to run in '04, and the approval ratings are very high, I think Bush would be wise to set up the succession to favor a conservative black Republican man or woman or a conservative white woman. It really is time for that, whether that person appeals to minority voters or not.

You have made several excellent points. And from the practical side of politics you are exactly correct. My support of Dr. Rice is based on her brillance, her credentials, and her experience. I think she would make an outstanding President. But, as you pointed out, electability is a far different issue from ability to serve. Sometimes, the two meet, as with President George W. Bush. Unfortunately, that is the exception rather than the rule.
Thanks for helping me think about these issues.
