New York airspace returned to FAA Area general aviation airports now open, ATC priority to diverted flights Updated: 11/12/2001 1:14:14 PM ET The military has returned New York airspace below 14,000 feet to FAA. All area airports, except Kennedy International, LaGuardia, and Newark, are now open. The New York temporary flight restriction area (TFR) has been returned to an 18 nm radius of the JFK VOR. However, operations to airports within 25 nm of the JFK VOR require ATC clearance. The FAA Command Center is now implementing a "diversion recovery" for White Plains, Teterboro, Morristown, and Caldwell Airports. Any flight that was diverted can request priority handling to get into these locations. Please check back to AOPA Online for instant updates on the FAAs actions. AOPA monitoring NYC airspace situation in wake of crash Updated: 11/12/2001 1:45:23 PM ET American Airlines Flight 587, an Airbus A300 bound for Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, crashed at 9:17 a.m. ET, three minutes after takeoff from JFK airport. An engine and a wing reportedly separated from the aircraft before the fuselage came to rest in the residential Rockaway section of Queens, New York, about five miles southwest of JFK. Flight 587 carried 246 passengers, including 150 Dominican citizens, and nine crewmembers (families of passengers can call 800-245-0999 for more information). Four homes were consumed by post-crash fire, and more than a dozen more were damaged, according to New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer told reporters shortly after noon that no threats against airplanes had been received, and that the pilot of Flight 587 reported no trouble before the crash. The United Nations closed its headquarters but was not evacuated as news of the crash reached ministers from member nations gathered there for the annual General Assembly debate. NTSB is on-site and reports that the flight data recorder has been recovered. New York airspace closed The military initially closed the airspace around New York to all flight operations and implemented a temporary flight restriction area (TFR) from the surface to 25,000 feet for a 25-nm radius around the JFK VOR. AOPA remained in contact with FAA headquarters and the air traffic control command center throughout the period. Aircraft information The Airbus A300-600, N14053, went into service with American Airlines on July 12, 1988. It received its last A check on November 11, its last more extensive B check on October 3, and its last mainbase visit for major maintenance on December 9, 1999. It was scheduled for its next mainbase visit in July 2002. The aircraft used two GE CF6-801C2A5 high-bypass-ration turbofan engines. The number one (left) engine had accumulated 694 hours; the number two (right) engine had operated 9,788 hours and had last been overhauled 2,887 hours ago. According to American Airlines official Al Becker, these engines are normally overhauled at 10,000 hours. American Airlines operates 34 other A300s.

Does anyone know the tail number of this flight? I don't think American is buying their planes from defunct South American airlines, but it would be nice to know its ownership history. The tail number would help out with this.

But the breakup into multiple parts is still a bit troubling. Carrying a lot of fuel, high g-loads while attempting recovery manuevers...lot of stress involved there, especially if he lost a wing spar as your incident aircraft did.

The crashed plane was going SW, tward the UN building, if it weren't , why was it way off couse!!!Sorry, but you really need to find a map. The Rockaways are most definitely EAST of JFK, and nowhere near the U.N.

Of course there is a Jihad declared against the US. There's no evidence it's been called off. True. Thus the "heads up" comment.
I suspect mechanical failure done intentionally by Muslim maintenance workers.
I'm not ready to rule out any cause just yet, but I'm not willing to speculate until I have a lot better info than I do right now.
When we use mechanical means to travel faster than a walk we take a risk that those machines will break. Some of them will hurt or kill us when they do.

Has there been any information as to why the flight was over an hour late departing?
To: MaskedMan
Nope. Not a word.
To: MaskedMan
As far as I know it is still an un-specified bout of engine trouble.

Seems like its pretty darn difficult for an engine to just fall off then. I wonder if the pylon could break away then? We could probably easily see that from a good close up picture of the engines.

Fox News and other channels are showing amateur videos of the firefighting efforts after the crash. It appears that civilians are helping with the hoses. Perhaps they are off-duty officers and firefighters, since it was mentioned that many police officers and firefighters live in that community, but it's also likely that they were just residents. That video reenforces my American pride.

This photo is of a 747, but I imagine the engine mounts are essentially the same!!

as an aside...your watercolor samples are fantastic! I'll second that! The snow/wrought iron fence painting is especially beautiful.

You are correct. This is an extremely tight neighborhood. Many, many NYC workers live there. Firemen, cops and Sanitation workers. People who grow up there don't usually leave.
I also heard much earlier on Fox that no one was running away from the fires, but were in fact running towards homes to try to help their neighbors. The Police are trying to keep people from doing that.

So sue me, I'm used to treating the Manhattan grid as east-west for orientation. But that whole spit of land is The Rockaways. Far Rockaway is east of JFK.
Anyway the entire idea is nonsense. The plane would have to fly north and west, not south, to be anywhere near the U.N. One could accomplish that much more easily on the approach, not the takeoff. The plane was in the air for two minutes, it didn't have time to do anything but crash, and you're insinuating that it was deliberately turning toward the U.N. That's ridiculous.
