Buildings are reportedly on fire in the neighborhood. Thick, black smoke could be seen. The plane was a Boeing 767, an American Airlines flight.
The Mayor's Office of Emergency Management has confirmed the plane was a Boeing 767, an American Airlines flight. The plane crashed at 9: 17 a.m.
The city has declared a Level One Emergency Mobilization for all of its emergency personnel. This plane was an inbound plane and there is no word on where it was coming from. New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was on his way to the scene of the accident.
All three New York City airports were closed after this crash. The FAA closed all of the airports and the airspace in the area around New York City. Also, all bridges and tunnels into the city are now closed and they are only open to emergency personnel.
There are early reports that four homes were on fire.
Kevin O' Rourke, Eyewitness: "I was walking home from the gym and I saw the engine fall off. The plane went to the side, and then the plane went down."
The plane was leaving JFK airport. It was going to Santa Domingo, and it was American Airlines Flight 587 and it left at 9:15 a.m. and it crashed at 9:17 a.m. The flight was an Airbus A306. Airbus planes hold nearly 350 people.
Sources say air traffic controllers received no emergency call from the pilots on the plane. The plane crashed just two minutes after take-off.
This from the Today Show. Four buildings on the ground on fire.

Because it JUST happened. Do you know a web site that's faster than Free republic on posting breaking news?
It's on Fox News Channel right now--Neal Cavuto reporting live. I'm sure they'll update their site when they get a chance.

If the reports of an engine falling off are true, I'd truly doubt it. The Allah-lickers were conniving enough to figure out how to turn a box cutter into a weapon to take down a skyscraper. I don't see them being able to get the engine to fail just so, especially given heightened airport security. Plus, it doesn't seem spectacular enough. Not enough dead for their liking.
However, I have been wrong before. They learned enough to be able to fly the hijacked planes well enough; and maybe the fear that results from random acts against the air industry would alone provide incentive for the terrorists.
Great gum, by the way, although I can't say as much for your former baseball team
GWB is putting a 20 day waiting period on issuing visa's to males 16-42 from a list of (I think) of eighteen countries so investigations can be made. It's a start. Hope it spans out.
I agree with you and others....wait for facts. It is not the time for speculation (which can do us as much harm as anything else).
If this is speculation, label it as such.
BTW, 770 WABC reporting 257 people on board the flight. All trains, tunnels and bridges to NYC closed. Cannot get telephone line to NYC for love or money.
Sorry, but lets get all the facts before I go believing the government. It's a little early for the feds to be jumping to the No terrorism conclusion. Not that I'm jumping to conclusions either. Just want to see the facts. We'll know if more planes go down today.
