So, if the union tries to spin these laws as evidence of a governor trying to "wreck the union" -- well, that is not accurate at all. I suppose the union could put that spin on it - my take was that the governor was providing for legitimate needs of teachers, that heretofore had been unfulfilled except by the unions. Seriously, I know teachers who HATE what the NEA stands for, but they belong because they need the insurance. It ought not to be that way.
And you are correct, the unions should be more responsive to their members, but as long as they have a "stranglehold" over them, they won't.
If I recall correctly, my mother (a retired FL educator, and a Democrat) resigned from the FEA many years ago when they called for a teacher strike - my mother didn't feel that PROFESSIONAL teachers should be resorting to such tactics.

Amelia, thanks for your above post, and for sharing that about your mom, a teacher.
I very much agree with what you're saying about the union "stranglehold" you perceive, because: in my experience as a former member of the union, the union was NOT responsive to me, and maybe it's because of the same reason the Dem Leaders are so UNresponsive to teachers -- they take teacher votes for granted.
I would like to see the teachers union show me a governor, anywhere in this country, besides the GOP Gov. Bush, who has passed not one, not two, but three -- count them -- THREE teacher-driven laws in his first term of office, providing teachers with such substantial new financial benefits.
Where is the competition for Gov. Bush in this respect? I don't know of any governor who can come close to what he did to demonstrate his genuine support and concern for teachers in this state. Of course he gets my vote. That's the kind of governor I want in office -- a governor who listens to all citizens, including: teachers.

Thanks for listing all the Jeb Bush threads. I was unaware that he had done as much good as he had. Are you sure you are not part of the Bush spin machine? It seems like reverse English to me.
