Andrew Sullivan: "We're not close to equality yet". Could someone please point out what the heck he is talking about? If you look around at today's liberal culture I would say homosexuals like Sullivan have MORE than equality - just look at hate crimes legislation and all the other crazy laws they are trying to get passed to legitimize their lifestyle. That's a lot more than equal rights, those are SPECIAL RIGHTS.

Sullivan has enough hate for both sides. He can marginalize those of us who think sodomy is wrong all he wants, but that won't transform his Clymer into a vagina. Some things are just obvious.

Sullivan is against hate crime legislation.

When gays can get married and serve in the military like everyone else, and laws which expressly discriminate against gays are repealed, which are still on the books in some places, then and only then will gays will have full equality before the law. In the meantime, you will just have to get used to the public square having to deal with this issue. It is called democracy.

Nobody is barred from getting married as long as they marry a member of the opposite sex. Sounds like equal rights to me.

We had a group of homosexuals drop in on another thread this past weekend, then there's another couple of threads about Malaysia warning the UK not to send any gay politicians over there, and now Andrew Sullivan toots his own horn again. What's going on here? (Not that there's anything wrong with that......)

Last time I checked, gays CAN get married and CAN serve in the military just like anyone else. ALL Americans, that's every single one, currently has the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. They DON'T have the right to marry their pets or multiple spouses or their brothers or sisters.

Ya, well if you don't love anyone of the opposite sex, then I guess you lose. But I'm quite confident this one is coming, and sooner rather than later. Attitudes are changing at warp speed. In the meantime, the two sides can circle around each other on this one all day, and get absolutely nowhere. Too many a priori and unverifiable empirical assumptions are involved.

Once gay marriage is legal, you will no longer be tired then because there won't be victims. I've already debated this issue with FR heavyweights like Nonstatist, and I don't plan to do it again with you. (I actually made up my mind on this issue after being in a state of some ambivalence rather recently.) Do a search, and maybe you might learn something. At least you will be able to argue your point of view with a bit more sophistication.

IF gay marriage is ever legalized, you mean. Attitudes really don't matter, except to influence votes. And most voters are against same sex marriage. It's votes that count--votes by state. But the point the AppyPappy is trying to make is that there are already prohibitions against marriage. You can't marry your brother or sister, or more than one person, or a person of the same sex. That applies to everybody equally. Now just because you don't want to marry your brother, but Fred wants to marry Ted doesn't mean you're less affected by the laws than Fred or Ted.

If suddenly we are faced with the Incest Lobby, do you think we should let brother and sisters, or uncles and nieces get married? BTW, if anybody wants to marry their first cousin, it's legal in North Carolina!
