Tajik airbases are less than 200 miles from Kabul, so we could be flying from there I think. Assessment of Tajik airbases, according to press reports back in early october were occuring in late september. In my opinion, Rumsfeld's trip was to set the stage for the ground war.

Maybe stingers out of battery power...

Stingers are terribly ineffective against an Apache. The helo has very good infrared masking and it would be difficult to lock-on to its low heat signature.
