There has always been a need to cross over the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor, even in the early 1870's, when the first ferry service consisted of a rowboat that made the trip to Terminal Island only as passengers were available. Ferry service was the only means of transport for decades. From 1937 until 1957, various proposals were considered regarding construction of a tube tunnel connecting the Harbor and Long Beach freeways. Engineers concluded that a four-lane bridge could be built for slightly more than the two-lane tube.
Completed in 1963, "San Pedro's Golden Gate" was the first bridge of its kind to be constructed on pilings. Construction required 92,000 tons of Portland cement, 13,000 tons of lightweight concrete, 14,100 tons of steel and 1,270 tons of suspension cable. It is designed to withstand winds of 90 miles per hour, double that required by code. The overall length of the bridge is 6,050 feet, with a main suspension span of 1,500 feet and 500-foot spans on either side. The towers are 365 feet high. Named for one of San Pedro's "own," an orphan from the streets and wharves who went on to become a State Assemblyman, it was The Hon. Vincent Thomas who cut the ribbon at the dedication ceremony.
The dramatic green bridge has been designated as the official landmark welcoming visitors to Los Angeles. Plans are finalized to light the bridge in 1998.

Coronado Bay Bridge
The superstructure is made up of 32 spans, 26 of which consist of welded plate girders, the rest consist of precast "I" girders, and orthotropic box girder spans. The bridge, which carries five traffic lanes, crosses over a navigation channel accommodating the San Diego Harbor marine traffic which includes both commercial as well as military vessels. The structure is located on Route 75 in San Diego County.
The close proximity of the navy and marine bases would make it a prime target.

I do not understand the Coronado Bridge being a strategic target...20 minutes drive would take you around via ocean beach way.
I think this may be a little attention Davis is trying to muster up. Really, what significance is any target in California besides hollywood?...there is none.
Apply your energy elsewhere I would say...

Ont other thing about the bridges... I used to be stationed at Coronado with a Marine Reserve unit... There are two bases there so I suppose the thought is that if the bridge was destroyed personnel would be cut off not to mention the folks who live there could not get to San Diego. Guess what? They can get around... just takes a little longer. As to the other bridges I can't say. I have seen the Golden Gate but don't know much about Northern Ca

Additionally, depth of the water is a possible situation if a span of the bridge fell. But, all aircraft carriers are outside the bridge parked on Coronado Island. The other ships would have no problem driving over a fallen piece of the bridge on high tide...the water is deep enough.

I went to work in the East Bay Area (Oakland and beyond) the day of the attack since I hadn't been told not to go. As I drove across, I had a flashback to my days as a young boy, when I would silently pray as our family's car crossed the Bay Bridge. I illogically feared it might blow over due to the winds that swept the bay's surface, and we would drown.
That fateful Tuesday, I didn't worry about the wind -- I was looking left and right to see if a jet was in the air, knowing that any planes still airborne were flying unauthorized and could only be up to no good. I couldn't imagine what in the world I could do besides pray if a jet hit the bridge.

I wouldn't read too much into anything that Tom Silly-man says.
Sullivan is a well known panic monger. - The slightest little thing and he is ready to call in FEMA. - He is the guy that messed up Rush Limbaugh's head; before Sullivan got hold of him Rush used to think just like his brother (who has a lot on the ball).

consider: If terrorists were going to bomb a bridge, it is HIGHLY unlikely that they would let ANYONE at ALL know about it. IT isn't like they are sending out office memos to all talk radio programs giving tomorrows agenda. It is more likely a diversionary tactic if it is anything at all.

No wonder California, complete with the Hellywood land of Sodom, is sucking up to Bush.
Now they need their own sorry butts protected, eh?
They're not running to Clinton nor Gore for assurance now are they, huh?
They know the right is right, but our lifestyles are too much work. They'd rather get their wealth for free, and blame their lifes failures on everyone else.
This is good. It's about time they woke up and smelled the coffee!
They know who to run to when they need a real man in the Whitehouse!
Besides that, I hope the people in California are safe. I wouldn't want anyone to suffer the fate of the WTC. No way. Even liberals. ( hack, I can't believe I said that)

Gov. Davis said he was notified that there is evidence that terrorists plan to target the Coronado Bridge (San Diego), the Golden Gate & Bay Bridges (San Francisco) and an LA Bridge (didn't catch the name) tomorrow Which terrorists did Grayout mean, the enviro-wackos or Bin-Laden's group?

Talk show host Tom Sullivan just reported that during a press conference Gov. Davis said he was notified that there is evidence that terrorists plan to target the Coronado Bridge (San Diego), the Golden Gate & Bay Bridges (San Francisco) and an LA Bridge (didn't catch the name) tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 2nd. You mean Muslims would want to close the Golden Gate? Hmmm?
To: evilsmoker
Maybe they'll emulate the raghead terrorists from True Lies and go after the bridges to the Florida Keys. I know it's the wrong coast, but haven't they pretty much focused on the east coast so far?
