This brings status (sociology 101) and honor to the "martyr's" family. Also brings monetary compensation in the thousands of dollars from Arafat/PLO and even Saddam Hussein according to one report here a few months ago.

They engaged in vicious white slavery of men, women and children, They kidnapped thousands of Christian children for slavery and converted them to Islam and created the corps of janissaries who became a nasty militia for the Ottomans. The Ottomans were responsible for the first genocide of the twentieth century, 1.5 million Christian Armenians. They slaughtered the Greek Orthodox by the thousands. Read carefully the history of the Ottomans. They were forced to reform by Britain and France through the 18th and 19th centuries although it did little to stop their genocide of Eastern Christians.

There's some pretty heavy slaughtering and hostage-taking going on right there in the Old Testament too.

There's some pretty heavy slaughtering and hostage-taking going on right there in the Old Testament too.

Care to name them? I would remind you that "slaughtering" implies armed warriors killing unarmed innocents. And I'm real curious about your interpretation of "hostage taking".
