"Are you a student of history?"

Following the attack on Pearl Harbour, severe restrictions were placed on american citizens and business. Manufacturers were forced to produce war materials instead of consumer goods. But we won the war.

That's what we need to do now, WIN THE WAR.

How stupid of you, you actually think Americans should make sacrifices?? Geez, didn't you notice that not many from the "Greatest Generation" are around anymore? We're in the thick of the ME ME ME generation now.

The VIDA card should only carry information necessary for near instant verification of identity plus such other limited information as the holder may permit, i.e. blood type, medical problems, etc.

There, precisely, is the rub. I could find an ID system meeting this criterion acceptable, provided that:

1. Prevention of "mission creep" can be enforced (e.g. by guaranteeing any user the right to read all information stored on his own card at any time, and erase/modify anything that doesn't have to be "locked" to prevent the creation of a false ID).

2. No off-card database information shall be linked to the card for law-abiding citizens (or not-so-law-abiding citizens with only misdemeanor records, for that matter). "Red flag" records are permissible for non-citizens, persons with felony records, and persons under arrest or surveillance warrants (e.g. you run the card and a message is sent: "WANTED -- Hold & Call Cops", "CONVICTED FELON -- Security Risk", etc.).

If I were you, I wouldn't hang around the NID checkpoints.

Keep the Focus on Anthrax and we'll have the ID cards. The News Media playing into the hands of the Dems. I still say the Dems are responsible for what's going on with Anthrax. The News Media and the non stop Daschle letter, no ANthrax but they keep on reporting it. First Daschle claims it was very potent and than he says he may have over reacted. Something STINKS here. 31 people handle one letter, I don't think so.

A national ID card can pin point your every move. Remember the campaign ads, if you vote for a Republican you churches will be burned, children will starve, seniors will be on the streets. The news media constantly play the African bombing at the same time Clinton would be speaking out to Black Americans and telling them to get out and vote. The IRS will go after anyone that speaks out or goes against the Democratic,Communist party. Clinton and Bob Rubin have tried in many ways to bankrupt this country,Greenspan was also involved with it. Many secret deals with the IMF, plus giving away billions of our tax dollars. The Clintons were throwing money way faster than congress could keep up with it. Today the Dems are working hard to get control of everyones bank account. The Dems are pushing for big spending. What ever money Pres. Bush asks for they give more. Dems are forcing Bush to spend the SS money. Clinton and Bob Rubin couldn't get their hands on the SS money but the Dems are going to make sure their is not a cent left over.

Interesting post.

I am not sure I agree with the sentiment of having "Big Brother" issuing ID cards but I thought you made some well-crafted and thoughtful points!

Ever heard of concentration camps. They could be housed along with all the others who are found without ID until they are otherwise cleared.

Let me make sure I have this straight: you propose placing American citizens without identification in concentration camps? You would erect checkpoints and force American citizens to show their papers, even though no probable cause exists?

In your mind, I guess this great experiment is now over. Liberty and freedom are dead, let's trash the Constitution. Do I have that right?

A.) American citizens would have identification.
B.) Checkpoints would help catch those who aren't citizens.
C.) Aliens who don't have ID should be detained until we know for certain they aren't a risk.
D.) There was no probable cause for authorities to stop some of the hijackers.

In your mind, I guess this great experiment is now over. Liberty and freedom are dead, let's trash the Constitution. Do I have that right?

E.) People who are here illegally don't deserve liberty and freedom.
F.) This doesn't have to go on forever, just until the war is over. Remember, we are at WAR.

This doesn't have to go on forever, just until the war is over. Remember, we are at WAR.

You can't honestly believe an ID system would be discontinued one day. Even VP Cheney admits this war will never truly end. I am unwilling to accept a card which violates the 4th Amendment and is in fact a license to exist. I don't need permission from the government to leave my house; if the majority of people believe we do, God help us all.

People who are here illegally don't deserve liberty and freedom.

Bingo! You got it!

You would destroy the liberty and freedom of 265 million American citizens in order to find the 5 million who don't deserve it? And you believe that's logical?

In the process it destroys my freedom to walk outside my door and not be compelled to identify myself. Seeing as how the Constitution prevents the government from unreasonably searching me, that's kinda important to me.

Listen, I understand that you're emotional right now; that's no reason to trash people's rights. If it makes you feel better, you go ahead and wear whatever ID you want. Just don't try and force me to do the same.

All? Impossible. The way to stop most would be at the border or by using the existing green card system.

Hello -- a little late for that. They are already here.

Quit being so selfish. I'm not gonna enjoy the process or the realities of having to get an ID either, but that's the best way to figure out who is here and who needs to be deported.

Quit being so selfish.

What can I say - I was born that way. Yep, I have a real problem when people try to take my guns and prohibit my free speech as well. It's a good thing we have people like you, who happily cede their rights to Big Brother. < /sarcasm >

I guess you don't mind your purchases being tracked, or for any retailer or airline ticket reservationist knowing your great aunt's name is Mimi, but I do. I don't want the information out there about what gun I buy or what ammo for one thing. There isn't alot about me to know, but what there is, is my business.
