Following the attack on Pearl Harbour, severe restrictions were placed on american citizens and business. Manufacturers were forced to produce war materials instead of consumer goods. But we won the war.
That's what we need to do now, WIN THE WAR.
There, precisely, is the rub. I could find an ID system meeting this criterion acceptable, provided that:
1. Prevention of "mission creep" can be enforced (e.g. by guaranteeing any user the right to read all information stored on his own card at any time, and erase/modify anything that doesn't have to be "locked" to prevent the creation of a false ID).2. No off-card database information shall be linked to the card for law-abiding citizens (or not-so-law-abiding citizens with only misdemeanor records, for that matter). "Red flag" records are permissible for non-citizens, persons with felony records, and persons under arrest or surveillance warrants (e.g. you run the card and a message is sent: "WANTED -- Hold & Call Cops", "CONVICTED FELON -- Security Risk", etc.).
I am not sure I agree with the sentiment of having "Big Brother" issuing ID cards but I thought you made some well-crafted and thoughtful points!
Let me make sure I have this straight: you propose placing American citizens without identification in concentration camps? You would erect checkpoints and force American citizens to show their papers, even though no probable cause exists?
In your mind, I guess this great experiment is now over. Liberty and freedom are dead, let's trash the Constitution. Do I have that right?
A.) American citizens would have identification.
B.) Checkpoints would help catch those who aren't citizens.
C.) Aliens who don't have ID should be detained until we know for certain they aren't a risk.
D.) There was no probable cause for authorities to stop some of the hijackers.

E.) People who are here illegally don't deserve liberty and freedom.
F.) This doesn't have to go on forever, just until the war is over. Remember, we are at WAR.
You can't honestly believe an ID system would be discontinued one day. Even VP Cheney admits this war will never truly end. I am unwilling to accept a card which violates the 4th Amendment and is in fact a license to exist. I don't need permission from the government to leave my house; if the majority of people believe we do, God help us all.
Bingo! You got it!
You would destroy the liberty and freedom of 265 million American citizens in order to find the 5 million who don't deserve it? And you believe that's logical?
Please tell me a way to identify all the illegals and possible terrorists.
Please tell me a way to identify all the illegals and possible terrorists.
In the process it destroys my freedom to walk outside my door and not be compelled to identify myself. Seeing as how the Constitution prevents the government from unreasonably searching me, that's kinda important to me.
Listen, I understand that you're emotional right now; that's no reason to trash people's rights. If it makes you feel better, you go ahead and wear whatever ID you want. Just don't try and force me to do the same.
All? Impossible. The way to stop most would be at the border or by using the existing green card system.
Quit being so selfish. I'm not gonna enjoy the process or the realities of having to get an ID either, but that's the best way to figure out who is here and who needs to be deported.
What can I say - I was born that way. Yep, I have a real problem when people try to take my guns and prohibit my free speech as well. It's a good thing we have people like you, who happily cede their rights to Big Brother. < /sarcasm >
