Warner stumbled on several questions, and basically got massacred by the teenage girl asking why Mr. Education's kids were all in private schoolSorry i missed it, Coop. I would have paid $$$ to see the question/answer above!!

I just fired off this letter to the
Times-Disgrace.
Dear Editor, In the Wednesday, October 10 gubernatorial debate, moderator Larry Sabato asked the candidates, out of the last six governors - three Republican, three Democrat, to name their most admired from each party.
Both gentlemen selected Douglas Wilder as their most admired Democrat and cited his fiscal responsibility in dealing with the state budget. Mr. Earley selected George Allen as his most admired Republican. Mr. Warner named Linwood Holton.
Mr. Warner's choice was not surprising. Mr. Holton has endorsed Mr. Warner's candidacy as well as the candidacy of his son-in-law for Lt. Governor. Plus, Virginia Republicans know that Mr. Holton has been out of step with the party for years.
But the problem is that Mr. Holton was not one of the choices offered. Out of the last six Governors, the three Republicans are John Dalton, George Allen and Jim Gilmore. Had he been educated in Virginia schools, Mr. Warner might have realized his mistake.
I wish Mr. Sabato had redirected the question. I'd like to hear Mr. Warner answer the question correctly.
Which Warner.

Had he been educated in Virginia schools, Mr. Warner might have realized his mistake. Sweet!!! I'm going to send something along those lines to the Wash Times and ComPost.

Wasn't there a question regarding Warner's wealth? He mentioned the Washington Post in his reply.
Something along the lines of "Are you trying to question the WP's integrity?"
I'm sure a FReeper can come up with the transcript and the actual quote.

"Mr. Earley selected George Allen as his most admired Republican. Mr. Warner named Linwood Holton."Holton is not that good a reference. He has a reputation as a wino RINO and is Kommie Kaines father in law, which should make his opinion, even if made while lucid, less than objective. Side issue, I saw post yesterday that the million moms are getting ready to march again, Kaine should be asked if he plans to recommend to his successor as mayor of Richmond to continue the practice that he established of sending busloads of moms to march @ taxpayer expense.

The questioner asked Warner about the impression that some had that he made his fortune unethically or perhaps illegally. The questioner said the practice is now forbidden. Warner got visibly upset, and started raising his voice at Earley because he had an article about this on his website. (FYI, that article is floating around FR somewhere - can't remember who wrote it.) Warner did his usual whining and bleating about negative attacks. He really did a fairly poor job of answering the question, but then Earley completely dropped the ball by ignoring that question and droning on and on about tax cuts yet again.
Warner - 1 point for answering question, but ineffectively
Earley - 1 point because he's not a dork

Did not get back in time to record the Earley/Warner debate. My apologies. Read this thread and you'll probably be grateful you didn't suffer through Warner's nauseating performance. :-) I'll second that.
To: Coop
FYI, that article is floating around FR somewhere - can't remember who wrote it. Morton Blackwell wrote the article: Mark Warner's Fortune is nothing but ill-gotten gain.
It's a little overboard, even for Blackwell. As much as we'd like to be able to label Warner as a crook, at the time what he did was legal. He saw an opportunity and took advantage of it.
To: mike2right
I agree. I thought Blackwell's article was poorly timed and over the top. And Earley did well not to attack Warner on this issue. But he completely ignored the question, which always annoys me during debates.

Dork Warner. (That's my new name for him, and I think it fits quite nicely.) Reminds me of Mary Sue Terrier.

Thanks for the effort in summarizing this debate. Due to a cranky almost-two-year-old, I didn't even get to watch the soundbites on the 11:00 news.

Not only did the RTD and WP for the most part ignore the WJLA poll, even WJLA is ignoring it. I've looked for several days now on their website and I can't seem to find it. I emailed them asking for a link and have yet to hear from them. I suffered through their evening broadcast the night they were supposed to air it, but I never heard a peep about it.
Some things never change in our elections, but Virginia republicans have won increasingly in spite of a biased media.

"Holton is not that good a reference. He has a reputation as a wino RINO and is Kommie Kaines father in law, which should make his opinion, even if made while lucid, less than objective." Dittoes...Holton was/is typical of the embarrassing ol' CountryClub Republicans who were pitiful also-rans in the State for years before George Allen came in and helped to transform the Party. Of course, with the sorry performance of the GOPers in the State Senate, we've still got a good bit of transforming to do!!

BTW...I thought Lefties called it the Times-Disgrace becuz of Ross MacKenzie's conservatism as Editor; although I agree with you because the remainder of the paper is decidely Leftist, IMHO.

Did that fine letter of yours ever make it into print? I sent similar letters to both the Wash Times and ComPost, but neither one contacted me. (No surprise from the ComPost, but I'm disappointed the Times didn't print it.)
